If you're talking about places like Alberta then yes, that makes sense.

I am in this same situation...though, I am a mid-30's male, professional, Texan, and have no clue where to move when they relocate me to Portland next month. The office in in Beaverton, but I really don't care where I live...I grew up in Texas (Austin), so 30 mile commutes aren't that big of deal...I would like to find someplace eclectic, happening, a good social life, etc. And I am not worried about too much crime...for God's sake...I'm from Texas...I at least have three guns...j/j!!!

I am a young single female (20s) planning on moving to Portland ASAP. I don't have a car, but I don't mind walking long distances... mostly I would like an area where I don't have to worry too much about getting mugged at night, but also that is very close to downtown, and where the cost of apartments isn't astronomical. Does such a place exist?

I've only been to Portland a couple of times and know ZERO about the neighborhoods there, so any input from locals would be really, really helpful. Especially about "bad" neighborhoods I should be sure to avoid. I'm flying out there in a couple days, and will be apartment-hunting like mad, so it'd be great to know beforehand which places to look in

Thank you so much.

I ended up getting a place in the NW area (on 21st) and I absolutely love the area! I keep hearing it described as "yuppy," but I don't really get that impression... I like it because the area feels very clean and vibrant and I love all the old houses. I looked in SE too, and there were some very nice areas, but I like being within walking distance of Powell's and Whole Foods. I checked out SW but it felt a little iffy to me (at least parts) and not as clean -- more litter and such -- and I like the neighborhoody feel of NW...

Anyway, I'm loving Portland, it already feels like home, and the people here ar some of the nicest and friendliest I've ever met. Thanks for the advice everyone

I would stay out of North and NE portland due to high crime. Anyone who disagrees with that is in an illusional state of mind. SE is ok, funky area. But I think NW and SW is the best areas and there are several max and bus lines that can take you into downtown from the SW. It would be good to get a relocation package ahead of time, cost is about $10.00. If you have a computer check the For Rent magazine. You can also contact the police department to get information on high crime areas. Good luck.

Actually anyone who believes that ALL of NE is bad is also in an illusional state of mind. NE is a big place and there are many established old VERY nice areas in NE. There are also parts of NE with high crime. It means you figure out which is which before you rent/buy.
