Lived her almost 50 years and love it!
I am glad I have almost always lived here..I moved away to live in VT during College and then to Central Oregon for a few more years before returning to Portland to raise our family. I now have two kids going to college in CA and MN, one for the sun and one for the experience.. They went to both public and private schools and we have great experiences in both. We actually live in Washington County which is a Portland Address with out Portland taxes. Portland is definitely more low key than Boston (just visited my cousin there who is dying to return to Portland) as far as city activity/arts/plays - but Portland isn't bad either. With young kids you may be trading in that for soccer fields and field trips for a few years anyway. West Linn is definitely popular, but there are a lot of nice places to live and I feel totally safe in about 90% of the city, East or West side. Being so close to both the mountains and the beach (1.5 Hours) for weekend activities is great. The traffic is bad during heavy commutes and Friday afternoon, but other wise tolerable. The rainy weather is not that bad. I walk almost every day along with a a lot of my neighbors - winter and summer! If you need a sun break in the winter you can head over the mountains to Central Oregon where is is dry and sunny most of the year ( 3 hours). My neighborhood is very friendly - I just came from a meeting to put together a party for the graduating high school seniors who were in 5th grade together in our local public middle school - there were only a few (maybe three families) who had moved away out of maybe 75 families which says something about the long term desirability. I have lived both on the east and west sides of town, just depends if you want the city or the burbs. There are lots of eclectic neighborhoods to live/shop/recreate in - from high end Pearl District - (Where I worked about 15 years ago in an actual warehouse that had not been turned into a highend condo) to Bohemian Hawthorn to the typical suburbia Mall that has most of the normal high end stuff if you want it. It doesn't take long to get to any one of them either. Recreation is great, lots of boating, hiking, camping, skiing, golf, some spectator sports (Not exactly Fenway) basketball, soccer, tennis and natural beauty everywhere! There are tons of great restaurants to try and lots of diversity among the residents. Hope this helps and good luck in your move.
As for the other posts seems there are some people with a chip on their shoulder who should move on to better places for them as this place is great for raising a family!
