My retired brother will be selling his house out in the sticks in WA and moving here to Portland to be closer to the medical care he needs. However a logistical issue has arisen: he won't be able to get an apartment in Portland before he moves since he won't be able to show them a large bank account until he sells the house. He can't stay with me more than a few nights because my studio in Irvington is simply not big enough for two adults.

Can anyone give us any leads on a cheap motel, preferably one that gives daily, weekly, and monthly rates? I seem to recall seeing places like that several years ago when I lived over in the SE outside 82nd, but do such things exist anywhere else? Preferably a little closer to civilization?

What is he going to use for income to pay for the motel?

I suspect that if he can show whatever that income is plus proof he has a house for sale, that he can find a landlord to take him.

Unless the plan is to sell that house and immediately buy a replacement in Portland. If that is what he is doing, then he does need a motel. A residential landlord won't take him if he will move out again in three months.

In the past the motels along Interstate Ave have been inexpensive but the neighborhood is gentrifying so they may not be as cheap as they once were. The other advantage is that the MAX operates on that street. It may be a walk to the stop but your brother won't need to use his car to go to the VA Hospital, for example - also there is a large Kaiser clinic on Interstate.

Now that is a useful lead. Thanks Neil, for giving me exactly what I needed.

Motel 6 at Delta park is reasonable. If you have a pet they don't fuss too much. It aint the ritz but its comfy enough for a short stay.
