Palmetto Bugs in Portland?
Can anyone tell me if there are Palmetto bugs in Portland? One of the things that drives me bonkers in Atlanta are the ginormous flying cockroaches they call Palmetto bugs. I'm gonna lose it if I move somewhere else with these damn things!!! Giant flying roaches= BARF

OMG. Ick. Lord, I hope not. I'm moving to PDX in June, and would love to know that giant flying roaches are not common critters in the area. :P
Here in AZ, we've got what we call "sewer roaches". Huge dark brown/reddish, shiny things. Wonder if they're the same as your "palmetto bugs".
Ugh. Just thinking about them is giving me the willies.

I have not seen anything close in this area... more spiders than in the south and some pretty giant garden slugs, but no garden roaches.

Yes, in the south cockroaches have hired PR agents and are called "palmetto bugs." Same thing, though. I think there are cockroaches anywhere there are people and trash, but the climate here isn't warm enough for them. I've never actually seen one in the Portland area, but a contractor friend of mine who does remodeling says he has.

LOL PNW-type-gal! PR agents. Classic.
*giving a sigh of relief that I'm leaving those nasty creatures behind in AZ*

There aren't. I'm sure roaches exist (never saw 1 in 7 years), but the palmetto bugs aren't there. I'm sure the contractor someone mentioned wasn't lying. He may have actually seen one or mistook one for a palmetto bug. Those who've met those nasty buggers could never mistake a regular roach for a palmetto bug. But, unless you're crawling around in icky things, you'll not see roaches.

They'd have to put their little coats and hats on to last a day here.
Never seen one, or any kind of roach for that matter. I'm from Florida and that makes me an expert.
Lots of spiders, though.

Thank goodness! I'm moving from Atlanta to Portland. I swear, the cockroaches (excuse me, "palmetto bugs") are big enough to ride on here! Even if you keep your house clean, you will have them. They live in the pine trees. Eeek! I am so happy I will never have to see them again! Another thing to love about Portland
