Default NYC to Portland - Where To Live?

My boyfriend and I are looking into possibly moving to Portland in January.

As we were researching, we came across that Portland has very high crime rates, higher than all of the cities we've been to. Is Portland really that crime-filled or is it just a case of crazy statistics not showing what is really happening?

Also, we were trying to research what places/neighborhoods to live in. We are early-mid 20s and we would like a safe, affordable, and laid back, creative neighborhood. Affordable would be preferably paying $700 (that looks to be average) for a studio or one-bedroom (or even two if possible) up to $900.

It would be nice to have some good food choices nearby as well.

We were very happy about our choice for Portland until we saw all of the crime statistics. Please help!

Oops, I also wanted to know about the music scene in Portland as my boyfriend is a musician. Does anyone know anything for rock n roll and/or folk?

MOST of Portland (i.e probably 85%) does NOT have high crime. There are small parts that do and it's not crime like murder, it's property and assault from mainly the meth addict types. I've never felt safer in a big city as I do here. The high crime areas also tend to be on the outskirts for the most part.

And I'm talking about PORTLAND proper, not the suburbs 30 minutes from here.

Most of SE Portland is safe. There are some sketchy areas as well but it's pretty obvious what's what if you drive around. It's like anywhere really.

Don't worry, I wasn't going to say anything.
