I'll be in Portland for a couple of days soon. As I am a huge fan of craft beer, I am excited to visit the city which played such a large part in The Great Craft Beer Revolution.

Recommended brewpubs please?

I don't have any strict criteria, willing to try anything really. I do favor pubs that also serve food, though I don't spurn mere taprooms.

Yelp helps.

Sorry, but brewpubs are so commonplace here, nobody gets too excited about them anymore.

There are about 5 good ones within a 2-3 block radius of Powell's Bookstore in the Pearl District. I'd start there as it's already a cool area to explore: Deschutes, Backwoods, Von Ebert, a couple of McMenamin's and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

I think I read somewhere that there are over 180 brew pubs in the greater Portland metro area so you'll have no shortage of places to explore.

What part of the city will you be staying in or visiting? I could give you a great Southwest Portland beer tour, but that won't help if you're in outer Northeast.

Thanks! I am actually staying in Southwest Portland.

OK, here's the Southwest Portland version of Beervana!

Start at the beginning - the oldest brewpub in Portland. Take Barbur Blvd. south from downtown (Broadway, 5th Ave. and Naito Pkwy. all converge into Barbur) and take the right for state highway 10. Make a right at the light at the top of the hill and on your right will be McMenamin's Hillsdale Brewery & Public House.

https://www.mcmenamins.com/hillsdale...y-public-house

Then get back to highway 10 (aka Capitol Highway at this point) and go thru the Hillsdale business district. Continue straight ahead at the fork, over a little bridge and stop in at Sasquatch Brewing on your left.

Continue on Capitol Highway thru some twists and turns and up over the hill into Multnomah Village. Just as you round the curve into the Village, the Lucky Labrador Public House will be on the right.

From there, turn left out of the parking lot and immediately right at the light onto 31st Ave. Or you can turn right out of the lot and left onto 34th or 35th, although the intersection at 35th is quirky if you're unfamiliar with it. Whichever way you get there, get to Multnomah Blvd., turn right and go to the store at 35th & Multnomah, John's Marketplace. It's not a brewpub, although they do serve beer and food. They mostly sell beer - literally thousands of varieties of beer.

Continue west on Multnomah Blvd. thru a densely wooded area, emerging into the Garden Home neighborhood. Just as Multnomah Blvd. merges with Garden Home Rd, the Old Market Pub & Brewery will be on the right.

The Old Market Pub & Brewery

Continue west on Garden Home Rd. and take a right at the light onto Oleson Rd. This will take you north to the three stops in the Raleigh Hills neighborhood. When Oleson ends, turn right onto Scholls Ferry Rd. and almost immediately into the parking lot of the Dublin Pub. Not a brewpub, but they have upwards of 50 beers on tap, from all over the world.

Then either drive or run across the street to McMenamin's Raleigh Hills Pub to sample the heavier/darker McMenamin's beers that you didn't have in Hillsdale (better to start with lighter brews and get heavier as the tour goes on).

Finally, head west on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway (which is our old friend State Highway 10 again). The Dublin Pub parking lot has an exit on B-H, or from McMenamin's, go back down Scholls Ferry and turn right at the light. A short distance away on the left will be The Lodge at Cascade Brewing. They specialize in sour beers. If you're lucky, founder Art Larrance might be present. He's one of the founding fathers of the Oregon craft beer industry.

That should make a fun day. Be sure to have a designated driver!

Second John's Marketplace in Multnomah. Most incredible selection of beers I have ever seen. Cans/bottles/growlers/kegs/burgers too.

I’d avoid McMenamins like the plague. Tiny food portions, not very good food at that, and their beer is terrible. The only drinkable beer there ironically is a combination of two beers, the Rubinator. Otherwise yuck!

I love Burnside Brewery, great food and great beer. Too bad the best is gone now in Bridgeport, the city feels empty without it even if there are 100+ others. 10 Barrel has some good options, I don’t love their food, and it’s not a local beer technically, either.

Alameda is good. I’d just explore as it’s more fun that way.
