Hey! I'm looking to plan a trip to Portland. I have never been to the West coast, and I've always wanted to visit.
What areas would you recommend visiting/staying in? Are there local hostels that would accommodate me? What is the GLBT scene like? (I'd love to meet some people to show me around, send me a DM and maybe we can meet up) What’s the weather like in June? How is public transportation? Would it be better to rent a car? Thanks in advance! |

Summer is THE best time to visit anywhere in the Northwest. The weather is perfect, with the least rainfall of all year. The Rose Festival is in June...there will be a lot of activities for you choose from. If you are staying in or near dowtown, I'd just do public transportation. If you want to explore other areas, rent a car. Unfortunately, I am not a part of the GLBT scene, BUT I will venture to guess you won't have any problems finding some connections. Hopefully someone else in the forum will speak more to that point for you. Anyway, I think you'll have a lot of fun here! |

As a potential future resident of Portland, I would also be very curious to hear any comments from Portlanders regarding the city's GLBT (Gay, lesbian, etc.) scene.

Here is a PDF file of the "Gay Portland" brochure put out by a Portland Travel site. It might offer you some direction.

If I were you, I'd go beyond just the city, try visiting their beautiful coast or go up to Mt Hood or St Helens, just an hours drive. In the city, though you should take a stroll through one of their many gardens. There all very beautiful. (rose, japaneise, chiniese, botanical, etc) You should also just take yourself through the downtown areas, like we did. We found it to be very relaxing. If you have the time, mabe go on the aerial tram ,south of downtown. That's something I never had the time to do, but it looks pretty cool. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, art galleries, clubs, museums, you name it! After all, Portland is one of the hippest cities in America.

Bring some layers of clothes... light jackets, hooded sweatshirts, jeans and shorts.. etc.. and keep an extra jacket or so in the car (or backpack). Yeah, I'm a Mom... The weather that time of year can go either way.. Also, if you go up to Mt. Hood, there will be plenty of snow left.
