I just saw a interesting video on an event called Saturday Markets in Portland and now has been extended to a all weekend event.

Does anyone know more about this really cool event? Where is it held? When? What do they have at the market? What was your experience there?

Also, do you have a lot of farms and ranches out there? I wondered about that.

Discuss!

Saturday Market is a HUGE market event held under...i forget which bridge. lol Anyhow, people come and have booths/tents and sell their handmade wares. You can get the most amazing and unique things there! Ive bought beautiful pottery, the coolest handmade wooden baby toys, a breathtaking knit sweater, windchimes, candles, and other fun items. Then theres the food...oh my. The goodies they make will make a dieter cry. Some good stuff cooking! I havent been for a few years, but I always loved going. The vibe there is awesome too. Just a happy, friendly, go with the flow feeling. Its a must do experience! and bring your $$$!!!

oh, farms and ranches? Uhhhh....I guess we have plenty. Enough to have every town out here doing farmers market on weekends, and several during the week. Enough that during the summer, I dont bother going to the store for my fruits and veggies! I just go to a local farm or stand and pick up there what i want.

Saturday Market is a PDX institution that been around forever. Runs weekends from Spring through Christmas under the west end of the Burnside Bridge. Definitely an enjoyable experience.

That's what I think I was getting at. I miss farmers markets and I'm tired of crappy produce at the grocery store. I'd rather put my money where is is valuable right back to help the farms continue on! I also was wondering if there's alot of horse ranches in the area?

I didn't know if the land is big enough in the Portland valley to host ranches and farms.

You can find horse stables and riding academies just outside of Portland. I know there are several down by Wilsonville.

the farmers market and the Saturday market are two different things. Both occur on Saturday, but the Sat. Market occurs on Sunday as well, despite the name. The farmers market only occurs in the south park blocks near PSU, from 9-2pm, April to December. The Sat. market occurs year round beneath the Burnside Bridge, near Old Town. It's more artisan craft type stuff, no real food other than carts. For food and produce you want the farmers market.

There are also smaller farmers markets sprinkled around the city that occur less often, more seasonally.

There are a bajillion (okay, I exaggerate) farmers markets in the Portland area. The one in the Park Blocks on the weekend being the "big one."

You'll find a list of the many others here (http://www.oregonfarmersmarkets.org/directory.html - broken link). There's pretty much one somewhere any day of the week from spring to fall.
