I realize this is an older thread but if you are still interested there are tons of horses in the Portland area. Not just near Wilsonville. People who aren't involved with horses are not likely to realize just how many there are.
There aren't riding stables where you can rent horses by the hour except at the coast but there are stables where you can take lessons, lease or board a horse if you have your own. There are 4-H groups for kids including those who do not have their own horse as well. Doesn't matter if you ride English, Western or saddle seat there are stables here within a half an hour drive in all directions. Oregon City, Gresham, Boring, Wilsonville, Hillsboro. Whether you want to learn to ride for the first time or are a Grand Prix show jumper we've got horses. Loads of horse shows too almost every weekend at varying venues. There is gaming, team penning, dressage, jumping etc. Just make sure the stable you decide on has an INDOOR arena! |

In inspiration to another poster, I decided to take this questions I actually put in another and make it it's own home:

I seem to be the only one.
If you are looking to buy horse property, there are areas completely surrounding Portland in all directions and in all price ranges. In addition to the towns I named above there are horse properties in Troutdale, Corbett, Springdale, Vancouver, Battleground, Estacada, Damascus, Clackamas, Canby, Molalla, Colton, Sherwood and likely more. The Lake Oswego Hunt Club has a lesson program for those without horses and so do many other area barns both English and Western. There are tack shops and feed stores right in the city as well as in the rural areas. They have horse shows of all kinds at the Clark County arena, Mt. Hood Equestrian Center, and at the fairgrounds in McMinnville, Albany and Salem. There are private barns that host shows and events as well. |

Yep, pretty much you are the only one so far Lee! But, it always starts that way...
Thanks for the information. I didn't realize it was more than I thought. What do horse properties run out there and how big I wonder? Sometimes, it depends on the area too.

Real estate prices really depend on the area. East of Portland cheaper than West in most cases. Oregon City cheaper than Wilsonville.
I do not own horses or property, but I have taken lessons for years at various area barns. |

We were down in Portland last August, and are looking forward to a trip back. The one activity that we enjoyed more than ANYTHING was horseback! We did all the tourist stuff, but the horseback riding (for me, anyways) was just far beyond anything else. I used to take lessons, but have not had a chance to ride in years, but my husband has never really been on a horse other than walking trail rides, so this was fun for both of us. A couple of times, I got gallop ahead while he stayed back and took his time with the other person. The downside was that neither of us could move for the next few days
We did ours through Northwestern Lake Riding Stables over by the Columbia Gorge. Stayed the night at Skamania... what a trip that was ![]() |

Deegers,
I originally moved here from Oklahoma where I had my own horses and property but decided against buying property here. Its too expensive for our budget unless you get too far out for my tastes. So I board my horse at a barn in Beavercreek (SE of Oregon City). As Lee pointed out there are numerous boarding stables and lesson opportunities available all around the area. They range from quite expensive and high end to more affordable and low key. You can find lessons for about 25-35 an hour and full care board from around 330-450 month depending upon where you look and what type of amenities you desire (agree with Lee to definitely go for the indoor arena). Each barn has its own unique feel so you just have to shop around for whats right for you. I compete in endurance riding around Oregon and Washington and it is fabulous! So many breathtaking equestrian trails to behold if you are interested in trail riding at all. Also I have many friends who compete in showing, dressage, jumping, and gaming events and there are plenty of opportunites in the area for whatever your horse related passion might be. Good luck! |
