Even though I'm a life long Oregonian and have spent about 15 years total in the Portland area (out of my 51 years here), I'm still not up on the top Portland restaurants as I prefer small dives in out of the way places.

However, my wife loves fish and it's our anniversary in a couple of days. What are your top picks for seafood restaurants?

I greatly appreciate any help I can get.

You mean all the years of hanging the clothes on the line for her isn't enough - you have to take her to a restaurant, too??

Now, now, I've been an obedient slave, er, husband and helped out as well.

Speaking of hanging out clothes. When we lived in Klamath Falls (at 4200 feet), there was so little humidity in the summer clothes hung out dried faster than in the dryer.

I ate at The Fish Grotto last year and it's a nice, quiet spot for an intimate dinner. Not the place for a wild and loud evening but that's probably not what you're there for. The restaurant has been there just about forever and is (like Jake's) something of an institution downtown.

An interesting sidenote is that the restaurant shares the same building with a bar (Boxxes) and a dance club (The Red Cap Garage), both gay and both accessible by the double doors to the left of the bar in The Fish Grotto. I believe all three are owned by the same people. Not that you'll have any interest in the bar/club but the noise from them does NOT intrude onto the tranquility of the Grotto.
