how much of the coast do you want to see? Are you more interested in rocky wild beaches, or long stretches of sand? Lots of people, or more private? Camping, hotels, or just a day trip?
No matter what though, you cant go too wrong along our coast IMO. Pretty spectacular the whole length.

In that case I would go to Cannon beach. Seaside is a lot like the NJ shore at times.

hummm.....sounds like youre really on the right track w/Seaside....I believe thats one of the most popular beach areas for the young and single. Then, after you meet some new friends, head on down south along the coast for some scenic fun. thats just my 2cents. Best of luck and have a terrific vacation

I've always thought Shorts Sands Beach and Oswald West State Park just south of Cannon Beach made for a great day trip from Portland.

With little kids Seaside is great. Lots of flat sandy area, wind not too strong (usually), shorter ride from Portland (anyone with wee ones knows what I mean) - about the length of a nap.

the OR coast is a 3 day trip for general overview.

Let us know what you want, (as per previous request... rocks, sand, golf, fishing, vistas, tidepools) and whether you are flying (and renting a car) or driving up

and what do single people like at the beach? (I doubt if there is much 'single action' on the OR coast, but probably a few decent gathering spots) Folks go for the solitude, scenery, not like the atlantic / florida / california social beach gatherings

South- pretty and fairly isolated, many retirees, good golfing. Quite a stretch is not too accessible, and not terribly pretty (dunes are good for ATV access)

mid (Florence - Lincoln City) some nice pretty spots, good Tide pools, fairly accessible, a few hiking and a few golf areas.

NORTH - Pacific City - Astoria Bit more crowded, lots of good hiking and beaches.(mostly rocky)

I like Twin Rocks for driftwood and sandy beach
Manzanita for nice little town atmosphere and sandy beach
Oswald West for a rustic / natural beach
Arch Cape / Hug Point for rocks, waterfalls, colors and pics
Cannon Beach for tourist stuff (quality, not trinkets)
Ecola State Park for Vista
Seaside for carnival atmosphere, promenade
Astoria for historic seaport and maritime museum and neat houses (no beach, excluding Ft Stevens State park. Ft Clatsop is nice Lewis and Clark history point.

From Portland (if you fly in) it is a nice loop to go North to Castle Rock, WA and see St Helens, then out to Astoria, then down to Tillamook. I would overnight in Cannon Beach, but it can be done in a day. (a Summer day 5AM to 11PM)

I like traveling Southbound on the West coast for easy and safe exits to overlooks.
