I guess my one favorite "thing" was the layout of downtown. I loved the short blocks and I loved how walkable it was. We'd look at our little map of downtown attractions and think, "Wow, that's 10-blocks away, it will take forever to get there!" Then we'd actually start walking and we'd be there in under 10-minutes. It was so nice to have no use for a car downtown

Very true about the short blocks. Tomorrow night I'm going to New York for 10 days, and I noticed right away in maps that their blocks are typically loooooong. That will certainly be an adjustment for me.
Glad you enjoyed your trip here, and I hope you can find a future settlement here.

Also, few people know Portland also had a riot in 1967, in the Albina District.

But it still goes on in one form or another. I still won't stop (and spend any money) should I be passing through the town of Canby. Something like 10 or 15 years ago, they passed a law banning homosexuals from teaching. Luckily, it too was overturned before it was ever enacted (like the parochial school law in the 20s).

My friend's hometown was once a sundown town. Now the ordinance isn't enforceable.
