Default Getting around oregon

Hey everyone. I am planning my first trip to PDX in a few weeks to see if it is indeed some place I could consider living. I have heard so many great things abou the public transit and how easy it is to walk around but was wanting to know in particular how far it is to walk from say, downtown over to the Hawthorne district and the main drag of shops and stores on hawthorne blvd. I really am interested in this area as it sounds like some place I could really enjoy. many thanks

Walking would probably take around half an hour.

As for public transit, you can go to Trimet.org and plug in point A and B, it will tell you the time it takes and connections you need to make.

You probably don't want to walk all the way from Downtown to Hawthorne since you will have to cross a bridge and eat up energy that you could use walking around IN Hawthorne, but as I say this I am reminded of the o.p.'s username so my advice may be superfluous. In addition to the other suggestion of the Trimet trip planner I can suggest the Google mileage calculator. Go into My Maps in Google Maps and you can find the distance between any two (or more) points in PDX (or anywhere) even if they are off street (parks, etc.). Better yet, rent a bicycle you will cover even more ground and in less time. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Portland city blocks are 20 per mile (more or less). So you're looking at about 2 miles from the west bank of the Willamette. Probably another mile from downtown, depending on where you start from. I'm always surprised when I walk across the bridges ... the river's wider than I think. But all in all, It's very walkable.
