Default Moving out of Portland--where should we go?

Please help! I was raised in Portland but my husband wants to move. We have a 3 yr old daughter. My husband was raised in DC and likes the fact that there is more diversity in larger cities. I HATE the thought of moving out of Portland. I love the "ease" of things...
Does anyone have any suggestions of really great places that might be somewhat like it is here? Help!

what makes your life "easy" should help determining what you are looking for in other cities... Chicago, New York, California, and Florida --- where I'm from seem to be all melting pots. But I think if you move to Florida, especially south Florida you should probably learn Spanish. I don't know very much of it and I find it quite irritating when some don't speak any English and they've been in this country for years...

I should think your husband has some ideas on where he wants to go. I just went through some trouble to get to Portland and if I thought there was anyplace better I would have gone there. Diversity is very overrated. You tell your DH I said that, if he still wants to go after that, let him.

Agreed....for once. Also, when people talk about diversity, that's code for non-Caucasians, but only certain non-Caucasians. When people are pining for Asians or Indians, they say so by name. But when it's African-Americans or Hispanics on the ecological menu, then it's called "diversity."

So move into a "diversified" neighborhood, and watch your crime rates soar. Oh, you did not just say that. Yes, I did.

Thank god we are moving to Portland from the DC area.

Like Leisesturm says there isn't really a nicer city out there.

Unfortunately it seems that we can't help you. It loos like your DH made up his mind.

Maybe Seattle? Very cool city but the people are too cold. imho

I wish you luck.

Ok, well if you want to stay on the West Coast check out Seattle and the surrounding areas. It is suposedly a bit more diverse than PDX.

And if that isn't enough of a cultural mix head south to the greater Bay area. While SF & SJ may be too crowded for your taste there are some nice burbs like Sonoma, Morgan Hill, Livermore, etc... with plenty of diversity in and around the area. Santa Rosa and Monterey County are also nice. There are pockets with higher concentrations of 'non-white' races and really good ethnic cuisine.

For the East Coast check out the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. It is not as crowded as DC and closer to the coast. Norfolk has more diversity of the two. So you can pick and chose how much you would like. Maybe live somewhere in between.

I'm with the others who think moving for greater "diversity" is a not a good reason to leave a city you adore. Do you know how many people hate where they live and would kill to live someplace they could have a better quality of life, thrive, and just enjoy life in a peaceful place. It sounds like you have all of that now. Why sacrifice it?

Please state why. I am just curious? How about the surrounding areas such as Norfolk, Newport News, Sufolk, Chesapeake, etc...? Are you guys just tired of that whole East Coast scene or...?

Have you actually visited at all?

It has changed alot for the worse over the last few years.

What else? food sucks! Humidity. Traffic. Real estate prices are very high.

In my mind, going from Portland to Virginia is like going from the Hilton to Motel 6. BUT, I guess some will like it just fine.

I guess we feel that we definately belong on the west coast. Can't waitto arrive.
