Mexican gangs? In suburban Portland? I would have never imagined that (not being sarcastic here).

Oregon has the highest-growing number of Hispanic migrants in the nation. I won't go into detail WHY (because that would be getting off-topic and would belong on a new thread). But Hillsboro-Cornelius-Forest Grove-Gresham. . . pretty much everywhere except downtown Portland. Lots and lots of problems with crime associated with them. So it's worth checking into if someone is considering these areas and has "gangs" in their minds as something to avoid.

Yes, that's accurate as can be. Add southeast Portland, Canby, Molalla, Estacada, Silverton, Woodburn, etc. Like Bluesbabe said, "pretty much anywhere except downtown Portland." All of these areas have established gang activity...along with the good, hard-working people who just want a better life.
That's why it can be so hard to recommend a neighborhood. Even where I live now, eight or so blocks in one direction can mean a world of difference. It all gives caution to moving to a place with your eyes wide open. Just like any other metropolitan area -
This has been addressed before, but I think all the places that've been mentioned have on-line crime stats availabe through the police departments or other city depts.
Still, in my book, this is one gorgeous - and overall pretty safe -- place to live!
Jealousy, BTW, this is a dog crazy town. Bet you'd do well here, if you opened your own shop. I drove by that shop in Tualatin I spoke of in my previous post. It's still there and thriving!

Could you go into more detail? I live in Texas so I find it hard to believe that Oregon is outpacing us or (especially) California.

I'll see if I can find the site where I read this. I can sure understand your question considering where you live, and anyone on this forum who lives in Arizona.
Whenever my family in central Calif visits, though, they go into shock at the hispanic population here.

I don't see gangs but in my neighborhood; Hawthorne, which I dearly love, but there is evidence of them in the form of tagging. Store owners are constantly cleaning and painting over them.
I still feel pretty safe here though. There is a lot of activity on the street and the shops have a private guard hired by the business association the shop owners belong to to keep an eye on things.

What do they go into "shock" over? Compared to central CA there are about zero Latinos here. It's such a small percentage of the population that I find it hard to believe that people would go into "shock" over it. Are they just surprised that they live here?

There were areas of Portland with as much mexicans that it was like you stepped into Palmetto FL or Manatee County FL (aka Palmaghetto) lol. Its a good thing the weather and higher selection of people in Portland make up for that hellhole life by far lol. Lil mexico there and lil mexico on the gulf coast makes no difference. Many are the same.
