Default Northeast PDX or Lake Oswego for family?http://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif

We're a family of four looking to relocate to Portland from Texas (small town outside of Austin) and have two daughters, ages 12 and 14. We love the idea of NE Portland around the Grant High School with the older houses, sidewalks and established small-town neighborhood feel that is also close to cafes, bookstores, etc., plus downtown. It appears like this area (Irvington, Grant Park) would have a strong sense of community.

However, when it comes to schools, on paper Lake Oswego High School looks so much better than a high school like Grant, with their strong AP curriculum and wide array of classes. I know kids go on to good colleges from both high schools, but does anyone out there think it's worth living in LO for the schools? I'm getting the feeling that this is the "rich, white, yuppie" enclave from reading some posts. LO High School looks awfully impressive, though.

And does anyone have any experience with newcomers fitting in to either of these areas?

Thanks so much!
