Where to Stay In Portland
I'm going to be in Portland for a wedding and am staying an extra couple of days to experience Portland but I have no clue where to stay. We were either going to stay near the airport or rent a car or better yet stay downtown in the mix of things. Can anyone recommend some hotels or some areas of town? If we stay downtown do we need to rent a car? We would really like to stay for under $100 a night if that is possible. Could you possibly e-mail your replies to me as well at ashmatical23@gmail.com. I really appreciate any help you can give me as I will need to book soon!

go onto hotwire.com and you can get a 3 star hotel for around 70 or 80.00 - that is your best bet for a nice hotel under 100. otherwise is will be 2 starish lol... i do the hotwire thing all the time.

OK - I was going to recommend the Park Lane Suites which I stayed in last year for around $119 a night but I just checked out some other rates and you must look into the Ace Hotel. For $95 a night you're like a block from Powell's. It's a Queen room w/ private bathroom down the hall (don't know if that's a deal breaker for you?). I think it's in a cool location and you wouldn't need a car in my opinion. We got by last year using the MAX most of the time and taking a taxi only twice: once to Pittock Mansion and coming into the city from the airport at 3 a.m.
Another bargain option is the Washington Park Inn. It's right across the street from the hotel I stayed at last year.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Monaco. I highly recommend it. they have free happy hour every night at five, they had an art showing, they allow pets, free wifi in the rooms, super quiet and the staff is really nice. Plus it's in the center of downtown, close to everything.
You probably can get a good deal on travelocity Downtown Portland, Oregon Hotel: Hotel Monaco Portland

We just stayed at the Red Lion Inn last week Red Lion Hotel Portland Airport - Hotel Overview
and booked through Priceline for $69 a night. You can even book it on the computer in the lobby when you walk in. Nice, comfy hotel and for that price you can't beat it. It's near the airport in north Portland but you'd have to have a rental to get around.

You can do total comparison shopping for a hotel at TripAdvisor dot com, where real travelers report their real experiences everywhere. This will open on the Portland hotels page:
Portland Hotels: Read Portland Hotel Reviews and Compare Prices - TripAdvisor
The left column contains all the links for info about Portland.
I always stay at the Mark Spencer. I like it, and I can get around everywhere downtown by public transportation. Plus it's right around the corner from Jake's Crawfish restaurant, truly one of the very best in the city since 1892. Seafood at reasonable prices, especially crawfish. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED because it's always full. 401 SW 12th Avenue. 503-226-1419 Mon-Thurs 11am-11pm
Another restaurant: Andina. A glorious experience that’s not too expensive. Peruvian cuisine. Just delightful. 1314 NW Glisan on SW corner of 13th and Glisan. 503-228-9535 reservations are best. Lunch Mon-Sat 11:30-2:30, Dinner Sun-Thur 5:00-9:30

The Mark Spencer is a well located hidden jewel but you may need to add the cost of parking to the room cost.
There is a motel near SW Park Place and SW King that is popular with value minded "Heightsers". Can't remember the name.

If you want to try cheap (under $100) and funky (in a good way) stay at one of the McMennamin Brother properties. Stay as close to downtown as possible. Portland has great public transportation. No car needed.
