I don't know if this was meant as a joke, but it is so not true. Many, many people carry umbrellas, including natives. They can be a lifesaver when a drenching downpour happens. By all means, bring one! I also have a hood on my coat that I use when it's drizzling. Beats having wet hair!

I thought that umbrellas were mostly an east coast thing. I lived in Tacoma for ten years and never owned an umbrella, I just used a nylon jacket with a hood. Like the others have said if it's not raining or drizzling when you get to Portland it will look like it's about to and I'm sure you'll have a bit of precipitation of some type while you're there.
I always say "If you can't change the weather, then at least try to enjoy it", (I'll try to remind myself of that when I'm shoveling snow this winter !)

I'm an Oregon native and I bought my first umbrella in my life after I graduated from college and had to walk to interviews in the rain. And I haven't really used it since. I can't remember my parents ever using umbrellas either. I think we had one in our garage somewhere. In general, I don't think Oregon natives tend to use umbrellas very often. Maybe some do, but most don't. Hey, that would be a fun poll!! (If I could only figure out how to do it!!!)
