thanks subsound that puts my mind at ease a bit knowing that I am making the right decision. I can put up with whatever but when it comes to my kids you are messing in a whole different territory.

The only reason I have found anyone cares where a person is from for any amount of time is to bust their chops. I get it all the time (just moved from Colorado)...and I give it right back

Hate is a strong word. Oregonians resent Californians who drive up the price of vacation property but don't stay to contribute anything else. (My wife is from Medford.) Or those who use Oregon's public recreation areas making them crowded for the locals.

We see it in Wyoming, too. I recall reading an editorial in the Jackson Hole News 35 years ago about the "Californication of Jackson Hole." (Obviously the editorial did little good!) It's not only evident in the Jackson Hole area nowadays; we see it in mountain properties even in the eastern Wyoming Bighorns. No, we don't hate Californians; we just hate seeing those mountain property values escalate to prices we can't afford.

In Wyoming it's more often the Colorado license plates seen in recreation areas that get the hackles up. When I lived in Iowa it was the Nebraskans coming into the state to hunt pheasants. I'm sure it's seen in every state to some extent. Don't take it personally.

I don't know where JonathanLB gets his facts, but they are skewed. While weather may be a factor in one's decision to move to or live in an area, it is not the all encompassing factor. Usually family, jobs, or other factors are the main motivating force. Whether you consider yourself a Californian now, if you were born and raised in Oregon, you will always be an Oregonian. The fast paced lifestyle of Los Angeles with all the lights, glitz and glamor can be enticing for many people, especially a 20 something young man as it appears JonathanLB is. Also, it is hard to read the comments about Mexicans, Asians, Persians and Armenians and also the comments about some relationship between crime in Los Angeles and the black and Latino communities. Those comments border on racism and bigotry. His comment "I like to see mostly white people because I'm white" shows his true colors and I would suggest a place like Sandpoint, Idaho for him to live instead of Los Angeles. Also if I were female and living in Portland I would take offense at his comment "it's impossible to find enough good looking girls in Portland. Even my guy friends had so many problems, but when they moved away they could get a hotter girl easily."

And his comments about real estate are way off base. As a born and raised Oregonian that has lived in Southern California for over 35 years and is a licensed Realtor in both California and Oregon, I know his comments are not from someone that is knowledgeable about the markets in both areas. Until recently, the Portland area has had one of the strongest real estate markets in the country. There continued to be year over year price increases until mid summer of this year and has since had slight declines in value. Latest figures from PMAR (Portland Metro Assoc of Realtors) show that there has been a 6% decline in value from October '07 to October '08. The latest figures from CAR (California Association of Realtors) show that statewide during the same period, values have declined an average of 41%. Los Angeles has seen about a 30% decline in value. Riverside County, (Inland Empire area east of L.A.) has the 4th largest number of foreclosures in the nation behind Miami, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, all Sunbelt cities. I have access to MLS systems throughout SoCal and have seen many properties come on the market for "Portland prices" because of foreclosures and desperate sellers. JonathanLB, please check the facts before making sum all statements about an industry that you appear to not have sufficient knowledge about.

I would predict that when JonathanLB has spent 20+ years fighting massive traffic jams, huge lines at grocery stores after fighting for the cherished parking place in the lot, 4 hours at DMV, choking smog, having to fight for an space large enough to lay a towel down at Santa Monica beach, and all of the other "joys" of living in a metro area of over 17 million people, he will finally look past the weather and appreciate what Portland is and has to offer. I know I have and that is why I bought a home there in '05 and plan to relocate full time some day in the future. When you are ready Jonathan, I'll help you find a place in P-Town!

I grew up in Idaho and Oregon, and living in the bay area now. I think what some Californians need to understand is how arrogant they can be. The 'ugly american' attitude is prevalent here. I sometimes can't believe the the things people think about places like Idaho and Oregon, especially from left leaning ultra liberal types who think that the Bay Area is an enlightened city on a hill surrounded by backwards conservatives who don't know better. If you are from California and want to get along in Oregon, try not to display the condescending arrogance that is common here and you'll be fine.

Im an artist. I grew up in california. I hate rude people. If my car gets keyed for having california license plates, that's just as bad as the paris hilton sterotypes in california. I have heard such opposite reviews about Oregonians (i.e Nice, open minded, etc...) & P.s. there is no such thing as californication or the california dream! The housing market is ****, the people are rude and pissed off, cliques are the majority Like lifted trucks and bleach blonde tramps, BBQ's permanently attached to tailgates. Good god I would take seeing my brand new car missing it's body entirely and propped up on bricks to having to sustain a lifetime supply of learning how to deal or fit in. NO THANK YOU. People move not for the obvious reasons 100% of the time. Some are young adults going to college and venturing out on their own, like me for example. To be honest i have'nt felt comfortable in san diego in a very long time! So beautiful Portland it is ! I cant put a price on my happiness KEY away if you feel so inclined. CARS are not permanent. I feel bad that would want to depict such a wonderful thing that way. What ever happened to peace?

Default re: Oregonians that are said to hate Californians (No)!

Like anywhere there are 'some people' that are unsophisticated and have no desire to rise to more advanced thinking. We (Oregonians) have our share: Those folks are the same blue collar subset that are the bottom feeders / backwoods folks, that are reluctant to change, as others in all parts of the world. If it weren't for the influx of Californians and others we'd be back in the Dark Ages. Some would like it that way ... I, like so many, welcome diversity and emigration.

Sorry I take offense at the "blue collar" comment. Although he didn't live in Oregon, my dad was a blue collar worker all his life and wasn't prejudiced against anyone. I hate the stereotype of blue collar workers being bigoted. Many of my native Oregonian friends who dislike Californians are white collar. I have blue collar friends who think they are just fine. Your use of stereotypes typifies the example of one group of Oregonians being down on another whether it's blue collar workers or Californians.

It all sounds rather silly to me. Im a student living with a PDX local & am friends with others up there too, Im not really worried, i viewed the post as more of a shock than anything, guess my natural curiosity brought me here. Im sure Oregonians get sick of the tourists and all the riff raff blowing through your clean and famously beautiful town and in result; result to vandalizing personal property. I have lived the majority of my life in san diego i have also lived on the east coast a bit as well, in san diego there are so many tourists you almost get used to the idea that nothing is sacred which really sucks so i can understand your frustration. I just dont agree, and i would never partake in such an activity either. I guess what striked me as odd, is with such a multifaceted city i would see patrons vision as being more openminded. I mean you dont know their story; Why their moving or wether their seeking salvation in your hometown....We are all human and are all connected individually and independently but still connected non the less, call me a hippie or just a sign of the times but im being honest regardless of how it makes me sound. Hope you all have a wonderful day!
