This post is cracking me up, the biggest porblem & down fall of where I currently live (Reno, NV) has been you guessed it...Californians. They moved here in droves sent our housing prices sky high & left when the bottom dropped out, now we have more foreclosures, construction companies going belly up, and brand new homes sitting empty than ever before.

Sorry but its THEIR fault the economy & cost of living in my home town is making it impossible to stay here...they need to get their S*&_ straight in CA!!

I have met alot of native Oregonians here in Portland, alot have been older people but definitely not all. From what I have seen in many of them, is a lack of respect for each other let alone a Californian or anyone else. I can't say that about all of the natives here, I haven't met all of them, but again the ones I have met here, leave alot to be desired in the friendly dept. A more depressed angry lot I have never met before elsewhere. So I don't think its just the Californians they dislike, I think alot of them don't like thier own as well as themselves very much either.

Default Regional Xenophobia

I've had the good fortune to have lived in several places in the world as well as in the United States and find people pretty much the same the world over. I've seen familiar smiles and humor that seem to transcend and language or cultural barrier. And there is always the coterie who just don't like strangers (until they get to know them), but then what else is new?

Thoreau said: "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." It is, imho, the fear in some people that incites a blanket condemnation of a whole category of people, i. e. Californians, Oregonians, Yankees or Texans, just to mention a few. This is not to suggest that there are not disagreeable people in the world, but CA has 36 million people. It's a pretty good bet that many are struggling through life just like the rest of humanity.

BTW, people moving to Portland do not put the prices on real estate - real estate agents are generally responsible for that. It's ironic, isn't it?

This thread will go on forever. I was thinking about this and in my opinion I think it's more a case of wealthy Californians or anyone from another state who can come to another state and pay high prices for real estate. I am certain that average or low income Californians aren't responsible for doing this. There are just more wealthy Californians than Oregonians.

When I first came here I got blamed for taking a job away from an Oregonian. I was reminded constantly that I did or said this or that because I was from somewhere else. To date my native Portland friends blame all transplants for the woes of the city. It's probably not just a Portland thing but I have to agree with JimRob1. Even though I now have more native friends than transplants, I still hear about how outsiders are ruining the city/state. I think they accept me only because I have lived here for 30 years.

It's fascinating how easily some people attain a sense of dominion entitlement because their parents happened to give them birth in a particular locale. As though events at Plymouth Rock never happened. Not only are Americans the mongrels of nationality, but some actually have the temerity to put little plates on their cars identifying themselves as "native". Oy, Kemosabe, Bro, Goombah, Hombré, pal.

I happened to move to Portland after living in CA for a couple years, but it was enough of an excuse for at least one person (Oregonian) to lie, cheat and steal from my wife and I. Now, I don't hold that against anybody, how ever many there are, who fancy themselves something special because they arrived before me.

Briefly, however, when my wife and I bought our home the sellers lied about the condition of the house. Numerous lies in their disclosure form. Astoundingly, it was their realtor from Hasson, Helen Leek, who advised them to lie on the form. In short, the consequences are that we bought a house over priced by at least $40,000 according to an independent, historical appraisal 2 years later. It cost us close to the same amount to try to get out of that real estate swindle, but the mandated arbitration process had a guy as derisive towards us as the real estate woman was - who, btw, made no bones about how much she despised people from CA. She set the price on the house, counseled her sellers to lie and took us for a very expensive screwing. It's just tough luck. There are crooks whereever you go.

My husband and I have been planning a road trip from the San Francisco Bay area to Oregon and Washington in May. We are retired, middle-income, and unpretentious. But these posts are making us think twice about taking this trip at all. If people are going to be hostile and damage our car just because the license plate indicates that we are Californians, then perhaps we will spend our travel dollars elsewhere. I have lived in California since 1974 and have met very few of those pretentious and arrogant folks everyone talks about. Most Californians are just regular folks.

If you're from Massachusetts, you probably were amused at the statements that began "As a fourth-generation Oregonian, I..."

It's like a business owner with a plaque that says "Since 1997."

Whoa, Destiny2008, there are occasional misfortunes in life. Some are deserved and some are not, but with 3,700,758 Oregonians in this state I'd put money on the fact that there ain't but maybe 2% or 3% that could show their family is really "native" born. But that's a distraction.

As Paul Harvey would say "And now, the rest of the story."

About a dozen neighbors had a patio party for my wife and I on the second day we were here. It was the the most welcoming we have ever experienced. A friend who moved at the same time, into a different neighborhood said that a couple neighbors knocked on his door, introduced themselves and welcome him to the neighborhood with a gift of champaign.

Now I have probably met a few hundred people here for various reasons and if I only met 2 that I have some circumspection about...well, I think I found a home in a great part of the country.

GB1, I think that most people mean well and protecting the status quo comes out of fear. I believe a person with a conservative nature also has a pronounced sense of fear. I suspect that is why the Miami population is so hostile. I've never known any other place like it. Anyway, I believe fear comes from ignorance and I find people in Oregon to be pretty bright.

I thought I'd post. I know this is an old thread but it reminded me of when I started dating my X, who is a native Oregonian, and I am a native Californian. Oh the Romeo/Juliet syndrome. lol. I had been up to OR before, and absolutely fell in love with it, so when I met this man, I didn't care, I was already thinking about moving. He made it VERY clear, that I was not to insult his state in any way shape or form.

That, to me, is the attitude I have heard about from most ppl about Oregonians regarding Californians. Don't say one bad thing about their state. Not because they think it's perfect, but because they don't want to hear about it from outsiders.

I can understand. I get sick and tired of ppl who live here in SoCal complaining about everything (traffic, crime, immigrants, smog, etc) and stay. It does make me want to say, "get the heck out of my state". Oh wait, I have said that. Mostly to people who complain ALL THE TIME!!!

There was a previous post by someone complaining about all the things in CA, who bought a home in OR and is planning to leave. My first thought was, just leave already, we can do without your kind. And it made me realize, it's prolly what all you Oregonians are thinking when you hear, probably by mostly Californians, ppl complaining about the lack of sunshine and your driving or whatevers. (BTW, my X drove worse than me, he was an aggressive arse on the road, lol. That or he was trying to prove something to me.)

I figure, if you love where your from, and ppl complain about it constantly, of course, you're going to be disliked. I hope, when I move up to OR, no one will key my car cuz of my plates (dear gawd, they're vanity plates, is that worse?). And I promise not to complain about the rain.
