Do ALL Californians hate ALL Oregonians?
For pretty much the entire time Ive been on City Data Forum, I have been fighting the "Everyone in Oregon Hates Everyone From California" the threads, the posts, the DMs....
Personally, Im so tired of being lumped in again and again in these posts/threads about how EVERYONE in Oregon hates EVERYONE from California...Ive posted about how my best friend is from So. Cal, my step mom born/raised So. Cal., my neighbors who are my kids honorary grandparents are from California. Dear friends, good aqaintences and the like....many from California.
About how my family has lived here in Oregon for generations, noone in my family is "anti-california" heck, we marry em! (sometimes..lol)
Ive gotten DMs from people INSISTING that no matter what I post, that no, i must really and truly hate people who are from California.....that I must be very rude and whatnot in person to people from California, no matter what I say in my posts. Ive tried over and over and over, to say "Look, myself, my family, and pretty much everyone I know, could really care less about where people move from. Whether it be California, or Guam...who cares? It doesnt matter to the majority of people. Ive tried to tell others that where theres gonna be the occasional jerk, who will say something rude to you because you mention youve lived somewhere else, the majority will say "oh wow, I lived 30miles away from there", or "My son lives there" or maybe "How neat! Ive always wanted to go there, how do you like living in Oregon?" That the only ones really getting told "GO BACK!!" to are those who sit here and say "Oh, Oregon is just a backward dump, everyone here is a redneck and nothing here can compare to even the worst part of California" or "California is so much better than Oregon, we just moved here because we could sell our teeny house for X.XX and get a huge house for even less! If only we could be in California instead" "Oregon is a pit and California is Paradise" THATS when youre gonna offend someone and get told "If you hate Oregon so much, if California is SO much better, GO BACK!"
Otherwise, MOST people are friendly and helpful.
But no matter how much I try to be friendly, welcoming, helpful, or hopeful, I get shut down and shut out. Im overwhelmed by the threads of people posting "EVERYONE in Oregon hates EVERYONE from California" For some reason, many people dont want to hear the positive. Ive been shocked and dismayed at some of the responses Ive gotten. Why do so many people insist on hearing and believing the worst?
Its just like those posts that say "It is dark and rainy for 9straight months in Oregon" and when I post a live webcam that proves different, I get DMs accusing me of photoshopping the blue skies....sigh...
so anyhow, Im hoping that maybe, just maybe someone will read this post and take something good out of it. That rather than thinking as you step over the border line from California into Oregon, that ALL who live here are gonna be hostile, that just maybe, you come here w/a positive attitude, youre gonna have a positive experience.
That no, not everyone in Oregon hates everyone from California. Not even close. No more than Everyone from California has had major plastic surgery and boobs the size of award winning watermelons.

My family and I moved from Northern CA two years ago, but we do have family up here, and in Washington that have lived here for 20+ years. I believe it is a very small majority of Oregonians that feel this way about people moving in from ANYWHERE else, not just California. Unfortunately people go on these type of forums to get information, and it's the perfect platform for locals to be negative, and to discourage other's from moving in. In reality, like you mentioned, MOST people could really care less and are very welcoming and friendly. You cannot go off a city forum, and think all Oregonians must hate Californians! That's just dumb. I personally only had one incident where I was judged from coming from California, but the funny thing is, that person was from another State as well!!!
To all future Oregon resident's coming from California, do not get discouraged from any negativety you read on here! I am living proof that this is a welcoming state and the locals are vey friendly!!!! And as for the "watermellon boobies", don't be so sure, I used to see a trail of seeds in every direction!!!!

I work with two women ~ both NATIVE Oregonians ~ who have had boob implants. Plastic surgeons do well here, too.

thanks guys....im sad though...where this thread only has 3 replies, the one about How everyone in Oregon hates everyone from California (or other states) has three whole PAGES....
I guess more people thrive on negativity than reality....too many would rather hear/discuss/exaggerate the bad. sigh....
well, at least I know that for the most part, those who actually do move here, looking for a better life, and are eager to make friends and all are quite happy and thriving here. I like to look more towards those I know personally that love living in Oregon, and havent had any stupid issues about "where they were from" than I do the few posters on here that keep insisting that same old hate/discrimination line. I'll trust more those whom I know and actually talk with face to face than the faceless doomsayers.

Never been to Oregon, have absolutely nothing against people from Oregon though, or the state in general. I'm sure Oregon is a lovely state actually. I wish we could all just get along.

Oh, come on. No one here or there is saying that all Oregonians hate all Californians, or vice-versa. If you, your family, and your friends don't, that's great.
What they are saying is that there are still active remnants of the anti-Californian sentiment that was more popularly expressed in the 1970s, spearheaded by then-Gov. Tom McCall:
Quote:
|
Petrified at the prospect of becoming "California II," then-governor Tom McCall uttered those famous words: "You're welcome to visit Oregon, but please don't stay."
|
You'll see a vintage greeting card on that page that reads:
"Tom McCall, ex-gov. of the great state of Oregon, cordially invites you to visit..."
"Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, California, Hawaii, or Afghanistan."
Sentiments have certainly softened since then, but the general feeling is still alive among some --not all -- in the population. It's the exact opposite of the picture Portlanders try to paint of diversity and open-mindedness, but it's real and it's not recent.

Thank you Oldtintype!! Thats it EXACTLY!!!!!
and frankly, ive heard more people on the forum making the statement about the hate/discrimination and more rumors, than I or anyone that lives here and Ive spoken with. Some people just keep bring up and up and up about rude things that were said before I was even born! Rather than living in the present. Yes, there are SOME people who still say such things and treat new Oregonians like that, but hey, theres also SOME people who still practice cannibalism....
personally, I prefer to go with the majority....
