If you read this, and then The Big Sort, you'd have a pretty good example of what's happening in America today. I guess it shouldn't be surprising that the states are evolving into quite separate "countries of the mind." After all, America is bigger than Europe, and look at how different those countries are. I just hope this process doesn't eventually lead to the breakup of the U.S.

Scone (yum) that link is dead, but, the missing perspective notwithstanding, I think it is safe to say that if the Civil War didn't lead to a breakup of the U.S. nothing will. We're stuck with ... us.
