Holly, I noticed in another post someone stated there is an "abundance of restaurant and retail jobs." I think it's just the opposite. People come here thinking these are the types of jobs that no one really wants so they can have their pick when actually the opposite is true.
I have heard on the news that although this time of year is usually a good time for temporary retail job hiring this year the store owners are not hiring very many more people in anticipation of a slow holiday business.
However, as much as I hate recommending Wally-Mart, a friend of mine who was let go from her last job recently was hired on in one in Vancouver WA. Maybe your mom can try the ones in Portland.
Good luck to her and you.

I don't think there is really a good abundance of retail or restaurant jobs either. There is some hiring for Christmas, but it's supposed to be pretty dismal. About the only places I have seen a pretty good amount of customers is in more cheap food oriented diners (fast food, pho places, food courts).

THANKS
Since so many restaurants are in the phone book, I'd just be calling them one after another.

Since transit extends to Vancouver - I think it does - I'd be looking at Vancouver too.

If transit happens to go out I-84 a few exits east, I'd be checking the truckstops too.
