I heard there was a Chicagoan being interviewed in sandals and shorts while Portlanders where in the background bundled up

In Portland or Chicago? Current temp in Chicago is 0, with a wind chill of -23. Portland's at 25 currently. So maybe it does feel balmy, in comparison. It was just on this evening's news that they said airport delays had begun to occur because of weather here, prior to that, it was because of Chicago and Denver.

no one wants to see someone else get hurt, but it is up to the individual to best determine what is safe. I have personally used the yaktrax boot chains this past week and they have worked great. easy to put on and take off when uneeded, incase anybody is looking into this option. have fun and be safe.

I'd love to see a little more of that famous Portland civility and friendliness on this thread. Instead I'm seeing...yeah, it's okay if people die and a lot of shooting the messenger. For the record I've lived in the Pacific NW for nine years, I'm no newcomer. And no, I would have no problem paying more taxes so the cities can make the investments to be more prepared.
For even more perspective, in Mass or Wisconsin the amount of snow we've had in the last week would have caused no businesses to need to close, no ice sitting on roads, no school closures, and life would have gone on as usual. Isn't that a good thing? Now I have since heard that the reason salt isn't used is because it's been found to harm the salmon. Okay, that I can respect because I loooove salmon, but maybe there could be some negotiation on avoiding its use in more sensitive areas but still enough to keep commerce and traffic moving. Even more plows at work could make a big difference too.
It's okay to learn from others....if someone from the desert gives me advice on how to deal with 110 degree day - I listen. It doesn't have to be an ego battle.

It's not an ego battle. And no one's being incivil. They just disagree. I see people making up excuses why things should be done here differently than they are, grossly (emphasis on the gross) exaggerated. Tell me, who is dying? Who? I keep asking, and no one has come up with any. Give me names and locations. With the ad nauseum news reporting, surely they would have mentioned it by now. Isn't it just a tad melodramatic ... claiming things needs to be changed to save lives, when they aren't being lost?

... and the reason is because it's a common ocurrance in those states. Residents are generally better prepared when it comes to having a winter ready vehicle AND winter driving skills.
Cities are also better equipped for snow removal since the frequency of occurance is common enough to justify the expense.
Our current storm is more like a once in a decade event and I'm not willing to spend one more cent in taxes since we already live in "tax hell".
I think our crews have done a pretty decent job during this storm. The challenge is trying to keep people at home when they don't have the proper vehicle or winter driving skills.

Me, too! I've lived here over 20 yrs, and I've never seen snow stick around like this in the metro area. davefr, I also think our crews are doing a great job, for having this kind of weather once every ten years, or so. I'm thoroughly enjoying this while we can!
