Hi -
I am a Wisconsinite hoping to move to Portland in a few years. You guys have a couple of feet of snow? How long has this been going on? I thought you guys were balmier?
Having said that, we have about 4 feet right now and are at abuot -20 with windchill.
So it's all relative. But one of the reasons for me picking Portland was so I only had to deal with snow maybe 1-2 times a year!
Fill me in!

I have no problem with our current weather. Frankly, I LOVE IT! I actually have no problem with the city's inability to keep up with it either. It's totally unrealistic to expect a city to have enough snow removal resources to keep up with an event like this when it only happens once every decade or so. The only thing I do have a problem with is the people who gripe at the lack of snow removal or whine about how horrible this weather is! Let's be perfectly clear, despite this record breaking weather, we in this city STILL have not experienced anything that should keep you from getting to work, getting outside to play with the kids, etc. Just be smart about it: Leave extra commute time; wear appropriate clothing and shoes/boots; keep emergency gear in the car. If you've lived anyplace with worse winter weather, you know this is nothing too serious to be handled and you know you can manage even without the city keeping up with the roads.
And for hollybjones: Don't worry. Portland experiences events like this VERY rarely. Personally, I'd rather have your Wisconsin climate!

May I jump in here? hollyb, you are so far ahead of the snow curve, that this weather will seem like the tropics to you. 20 to 30 degrees during daytime? I'd say that was mild for winter.
I agree with roneb. Be even just slightly prepared (our heat went off for a several hours - not days) & use common sense. We'll be back to rain soon enough, and then people can complain about how soggy it is here! You can't win for losing....

Thanks! That was what I was thinking! I can take some rain for 5 months versus blizzards and windchills and chillbains (spelling? - cracked hands) any day. So excited to move, but have a daughter in HS who needs to finish here!
Plus snow days can be fun unless you're a telecommuter!

I hope the city continues to leave the snow pilled on streets and sidewalks. We only get this every 20 years or so and would hate to have it all melt away in a day instead of a week, because someone needs cigarettes or beer. I myself find it enjoyable to slip around and comical to watch us all fall on our well insulated backsides.

For me personally, I find the low cloud cover and consistent rain in the winter to be a real downer. Having grown up in places with snow (MT & AK) and gone to college in MN, I much prefer cold crisp days (even the below zero ones!) with some sunshine or higher clouds.
