Hi -
I am brand new to this forum. I live in Wisconsin (born and raised in the Bay Area and moved to WI about 30 years ago) and I am sick of snow and below freezing weather. I am thinking of moving to Portland when my daughter graduates from high school (in about 3-4 years).

So you get some snow in Portland? How often does this happen and how long does it last?

Hi -
I did check that post out! I should put a reply on there too. I just had to laugh a bit at the replies. I would be excited too about snow if it only came once or twice a year! Then it's fun. It's not so fun when it's every day. We got a 100 inches last year and I am now SICK of snow. But out in Wisconsin we do know how drive in it - at least slowly. We don't stay home unless maybe 6 inches come down in a few hours.

But my real question is - how often does this happen in Portland?

Two, maybe 3 times a year (sometimes not at all), more commonly toward February, but I remember a year when we had standing snow at Thanksgiving (maybe 18-20 years ago?). It's an infrequent event, with black ice being a bit more common. If you live in the foothills or toward the mountains, above about 1,000', you'll see snow every year. It rarely sticks around for more than a day or two. Black ice on the roads is much more common.

If you're coming from somewhere snow is common, you'll be irritated by the way it's handled here - it's rare enough that the cities have limited equipment to deal with it and a LOT of drivers just can't handle it.

The present cold snap is from the middle of California up into Canada, over to Minnesota and down to Texas, so it's a massive front.
