The amount of information is staggering. I sincerely appreciate it, and hope I didn't come off like a jerk with the comment about cost of living differences. I'm pretty well aware of the difference in salary between west coast and east coast, And I wouldn't head out there without a job locked-down. I've heard Pearl is expensive to live in, but that NW Portland/Downtown/Hawthorne are a bit more geared towards a younger crowd.

Think very carefully about your decision, many things you may take for granted about the East will not be there in Portland (decent salaries and good pizza come to mind first)....I moved there from Philly years ago, and came back east after a few years, to me it was not worth it to stay and deal with the housing prices out there. If your income is high enough and/or you like OR enough then you'll make it work though, it's very different from Jersey and if you fall in love with the vibe there you may be hooked....good luck.

I live downtown (near PSU) and I love it. I'm a young (25) and married, and moved from the MidWest in September. We have a 1 bedroom (that I share with my husband) and it runs us just over $1,000/month. Two bedrooms downtown were out of our price range, you might look further out towards Mutlnomah Village or something like that for 2 bedrooms. Just look on the many online apartment finders to see what is out there and what you could afford. PM me if you ever want to chat.

I think you for sure have to like the vibe there in Portland and if you do and also come from the east coast like ME, you will deal with the fact that most of the pizza is not very good there and will still like the city. Its a definite interpersonal connection you have to have with yourself. I know I have always been a little strange in my own way so I know Portland fits.
If its a guy leaving the east coast for a cheaper way of life but hes not very "weird", he may point constantly at the fact they dont do it like the east coast does it when it comes to food and what not.

I fit in fine in Portland, and liked the vibe to an extent, left a lot of friends behind, thank you very much. I did not move there thinking/hoping it would be significantly cheaper then where I'm from, either....and there were many factors that combined in my decision to leave. As far as "weird" goes (however you interpret that), what makes you think you know anything about me, how I look, what my views are etc? To me, most of the areas I grew up in/lived in during my life were more "weird" than Portland in the sense I *think* you're saying - Portland has a "rep" for the weirdness but cannot hold a candle to those who are weird without even trying, take a good percentage of Baltimore for example.
I guess I take pizza more seriously than some, because yes it was a problem while I was out there. I should not have expected Portland to have quality thin crust pizza, it's the wrong area for it, so be it. Where are you from meltin? "east coast" is a little vague.....but rather than start to make assumptions about you like you did about me, I thought I should ask.

I love the weirdness in Portland, at least the non scary kind. It's one thing to see the zombie bike ride or Elvis on the bus, I can't get enough of that. However, some things classified as weird or funky...like people doing their business on the street, or screaming at people who aren't there...are not as fun. None hold a candle to what I've seen in Philly, but that's kind of a good thing.

I love the food around here, but not a good thing either...I need to work out more to balance it out!

Dude your getting a little bit of an attitude on you it seems.
I didnt assume anything about you.
I think when you describe original weirdness, its the sense that you can be weird just by having an imagination with various comedy rather than how you look. I think people in Portland do try hard to be weird a lot of times when in reality, some are not fun people to be around as I got those vibes as well.
I am from Boston area.
Portland pizza imo is all thick crust at least from what I seen.
Funny thing is when I was out in Portland, I met someone from Baltimore also. You might be him.

It constantly slays me when people move to a new place, and are upset/amazed that it's not like the old place. Isn't that the point of moving somewhere new and different? For what it has, not what it doesn't?
