Default From Honolulu to Portland

Aloha, I currently live in Honolulu. I have read and researched plenty on Portland but still have a few questions.

1. Before I moved to Honolulu I had never seen a homeless person and now I feel as if Honolulu has more than any other place. I have lived in Guam, Panama, Germany, Texas, Louisiana. So my question is has anyone ever lived or visited Honolulu to compare the homeless people to Portland?

2. I have booked a flight for the last two weeks of March to visit Portland. I would like to know what kind of whether will I be experiencing?

Mahalo, Chanel

1) According to a couple of news sources, Portland has the highest population of homeless in the nation (taking size of city into account). They are thick as flies. A very unfortunate situation for them.

2) Transition month. Be prepared for sun, rain, wind, cold, warm, humid and all of it to change at a moment's notice.

According to federal government reporting Nevada has the highest percentage of homeless.

Portland may have a high number for its population but it seems that Dallas has many more with a new public shelter there sleeping 500 on cold nights and more in other shelters or under bidges. The Dallas county estimate of homeless is over 5,000 with some counts approaching 10,000. As bad as the problem is in Portland, I think the issue is bigger in warmer climes.

Expect it to be cloudy and rainy in March. Possibly windy as well.

You'll find a brazen homeless population in Portland. The downtown and SE areas have some problems with them, but most neighborhoods are fine.

Personally, I think the city of Portland makes it too easy for homeless people to relocate from other states. One big problem for me is that they qualify for the Oregon Health Plan when they aren't even residents! ( not to mention destroying their bodies with drugs and alcohol for years)

It's a good time to come and see if you like it- March can be very rainy and you'll know if you can take it!

According to this chart, as a percentage of population, Detroit has the highest homeless rate. Portland and Las Vegas are about the same, and Dallas is much lower than Portland:

The info is three years old.
