Hi everyone...just have a few questions about the Portland area...
So I am tentatively relocating to the Portland area (possibly St. Helens), and have lived in the midwest all of my life (southwest Missouri). Being a young, single male, are there any areas of Portland that you would suggest that combine the metropolitan feel with affordable housing (apartments, lofts, etc)? I would really like to be able to walk to most places...

Thanks to all who respond!!!!

If you're going to be working in St. Helens, you might want to look at the St. Johns neighborhood, or in NW Portland. There will be more happening in NW, but St. Johns seems like a nice neighborhood. And I think it's still really affordable.

I live in St. John's. I walk most places in the neighborhood, and it's an easy drive down highway 30 to downtown. I think it would be a good choice for you.

I live near St. Helens. It's a small town, and used to be about logging and the paper mill. That's rapidly going away, and the town is really struggling. If you want a metro feel, with walkability, you want Portland, not Columbia County. Believe me, the only ones who walk a lot are the cows, and they've got a pretty short commute to work.
