Default Aurora, OR

Hey everyone. My husband and I currently live in Beaverton, but we're recent transplants - from Connecticut. We're thinking about buying a house in Aurora, and I was wondering....Aside from farms...What's there? How are the people? Is it a close-knit community/neighborly? Or is it your typical everyone-keeps-to-themselves kinda deal? Any info about Aurora would be great!! Thanks in advance!!

I have a couple friends who live there and one who teaches there. They really enjoy it. They have found it quite friendly with good town spirit and 'home town' activities. We enjoy going to the quilt show and other 'cultural' things there, & of course antique shopping. In general... it is more conservative. I have often found that towns based around an agrarian economy / region are pretty 'community / benevolent' places to hang out. Aurora will have a broad mix of folks (artsy to merchant to sleepers to farmers) and a few growing pains, but probably a nice bunch of folks. There was a pretty strong Mennonite background in the region, before the 'commuters' started infiltrating.

Aurora has an interesting history. A group of Christian communists settled out there, led by a man who had been influenced by the Shakers. These folks had a sort of commune arrangement, but with separate homes, marriages, and families. They eventually broke up on the question of private property, unsurprisingly. There are several old building still standing from that era. Google 'Aurora colony' if you would like more info.

I grew up there having moved from Portland/Aloha. It was a great place to grow up as a kid, though I did feel a bit of an outsider because many of the people who lived there (late 70s, early 80's) were all related. Also, I was pretty much a city boy with the attitudes that come with that.

In any case, it was a fun place and the people were very friendly. Lots of farmers and blue-collar workers, but the white-collar people never felt out of place. Lots of outdoorsmen and their ativities dominate the culture there - hunting, fishing, camping. I'm not sure if the Aurora Jubilee is still around, but that was a great festival to attend in the summer.

As the poster above notes, it is an antique capital, thus a lot of tourists on the weekend. There were also some really nice restaurants back in the day - Chez Moustache?

The school district is North Marion. It seemed adequate when I was there, though I'm not sure they felt the same about me.

The only drawback is that most of your shopping will have to be done in Canby. So expect to put some miles on the car.

In all, I think Aurora is a great place for anyone, but especially for those with children, and those who have an interest in history and the arts.

Drive up and down 99 several times before you decide. Visit in Woodburn and Canby so you know the area. Good Luck.
