Default Portland Backyards and Surrounding Small Towns

I'm considering moving to Portland. Are there quiet residential areas where one can have a somewhat private backyard? I will likely not have much to spend on rent, probably around $500 to $600 a month. I'll likely be working in the NE part of the city by the airport and don't want that long of a commute.

Are there any small towns where one can be close to NE Portland and have a nice backyard for a reasonable price?

Thanks.

Your chances of finding a house or duplex with a decent little back yard for $500-600 in a decent neighborhood is somewhat better than President Obama lowering taxes. It ain't gonna happen.

Probably.

I have two suggestions.

Check around the Parkrose area. It's known for drugs & prostitution, but there are some little pockets in there that may work out. It's in the 92nd-122nd area around NE Sandy. My best suggestion is to look in Vancouver between I-205 and the airport just off SR14. Pickings are slim, but stranger things have happened.

we lived in a neat little neighborhood in Tigard where we rented a 3bdrm/2bth duplex w a yard big enough for a swingset, a 10ft pool, and enough room for 2kids and a dog to run around in, for 600.00month. But that was about 8yrs ago.....
whats your thoughts on moving in and renting just a room/couple rooms from someone? One of my moms old neighbors had rentivated their house, and the downstairs had a private entrance/livingroom/bathroom and bedroom, they shared the kitchen, and last I knew, she was charging 300.00rent (this was up off skyline area and was last year)
would something like that work for you maybe?
