Smile Moving to Oregon

I have had the misfortune of living most of my life in the boring flat state of Texas. But that is going to finally all change next year! I am trying to figure out the best and least expensive method of transporting furniture from a one-bedroom apartment and of course my car and self up there. Can anyone give me any pointers on the best way to go about this? Should I try and liquidate most of my assests so I won't need as big a truck?
Also, anyone living in Oregon, can you tell me what are the least expensive cities in and around portland?
Thanks for your imput,
Robert

Hi RCS3, I also lived a decade in Texas and the main reason I left was the unbearably boring landscape. When I came out, I first got a place to live and assesed all that I would need. I figured out I could leave some stuff behind in storage or with my parents and bring the rest. As far as transporting the stuff, it depends what you have. If you have a couch then you will need a Uhaul. I believe Uhauls are cheaper than hiring a moving service. Of course that means you will need a second drive. Maybe others can chime in on this.

As far as cheap places to live go, what is your range and what kind of apartment are you looking for?

I think DW meant the "General Moving Issues" forum and I agree about U-Haul. Avoid. Penske then Budget in that order. Allied, North American Rockwell, Mayflower, etc. Well, if you can afford that kind of service you don't need our help. Likely you wouldn't be looking for inexpensive cities in the Portland Metro area. We did not attempt to move a single stick of furniture yet we managed to fill a 16' truck to the gills with 'stuff'. My advice, liquidate all furniture that cannot double as some kind of container for something else. It will not be worth the $$$ in gas and labor to move it. I don't think it is a given that you will need a co-driver. Bargains are where you find them. In theory we shouldn't be paying as much as we do to live so far from PDX but we do. Still, I know some people living out here that pay much more. OTOH there are people living very close in like, say Sellwood or Hollywood even that luck into places in the 800's a month. Watch Craigslist or wait till you arrive and cruise around likely neighborhoods looking for "For Rent" signs.

I like the crate rentals (Not Pods, but there are others) that are cheap and effective...but you really have to pad things well. We did one for a 2 bedroom, no real big furniture (no sofa or kitchen table, but included bed) for about $800.

Although it is still unclear at this time wheather I will be starting a job here in which I can transfere through to their location in Oregon, or if I will just start a new job there. My current gross monthly income is under 2K, so I am looking at apartment rent or maybe house if I can find one where I can get by with paying only 5-6 hundred a month.
Why is U-haul such a bad choice?

check craigslist for rentals.
U-Haul trucks are horrible! They break down more often than not. Go to the General Moving Issues forum and read what has been posted. Penske trucks are the best way to go.
