One of the earlier posters repeated the tired right-wing meme that Oregon has punitive taxes and that that is why our economic situation is not good. While there some of what this person said is true (we do have a high mininum wage, and there are some ways in which the city of Portland makes life difficult for small business owners), Oregon actually has relatively low business taxes at the state level, and that is something that can be easily verified.
I think the weak economy has a lot more to do with the fact that our educational system is pathetic. California, Massachusetts, and New York have notoriously high taxes, but they all have lots of business headquarters. That is because the best and the brightest flock there, and they have major research universities.
Oregon, by contrast, is continually looking at having to end its school year early due to lack of funding.
Another thing to know is that if you have a "corporate headquarters" type of job, and are coming from a place that has a lot of them, you may have a challenging time here. The only major company that is headquartered here is Nike, and in my experience, they are very difficult to break into.
The Oregonian recently had an article on the state's economy in which they advised unemployed residents of the state to consider leaving.
While this doesn't necessarily mean that somebody shouldn't move here if they really want to, they should know that they will be flying into a very stiff headwind.

Just an FYI, a PhD candidate is indeed simply a student who has passed his 'qualifying' exam. A PhD candidate working side jobs is not really that surprising. A typical PhD candidate makes anyway from 18K to 22K a year and that's BEFORE taxes! Usually only those in the natural science programs have their health insurance and tuition paid for by their department BUT can you really live solely on 18K to 22K a year?!?!?!

I am sure its bad, but I'm also glad to hear people are fighting instead of sitting back and letting society bail them out. I currently live in a city rife with material posessions, overspending, and entitlement. Couple that with a bad economy and you get the state we're in now. I don't see that many people going to extremes to find employment here.
This describes a good part of Portland that has been and continues to be successful. We have become a city of haves-and-have-nots. No one here is letting Society bail them out. Society has nothing to offer to the many unemployed people particularly ones without families who can apply for some relief.
I have seen many friends leave the state after failing to find employment. They weren't specialists in any fields; just hard workers looking for ever-decreasing job opportunities. Many people start out with the attitude that they are hard-working, diligent, thrifty, have perseverance, etc but the cold facts of life are they are fooling themselves into thinking this will make them successful. Maybe in Horatio Alger's time but certainly not in today's market.
I hope the large insurance company you will be working for works out for you. I also work for a large insurance company home-based in Portland that gives Sarbannes Oxley a cursory nod at best. They are notorious for hiring new IT programs and firing them midway through installation. They are doing some hiring now because they have closed offices and cut back others. They now need people in Portland because all the work is being moved here. They will be replacing 150 employees with 105.
But hopefully you will not be caught in any of this and believe it or not I do wish you luck. I still mantain though that you will get quite a different feeling about Portland and it's economic situation once you move here.

This comment is a bit alarming for me as DH just accepted a job offer in Portland and we'll be moving from one of the best public school districts in the country (from test score stand point). I had done some research and realized that we'd have to accept slightly less good schools, and I'm aware about the lack of a nationally-well regarded major research university in OR. But your statement is the first that I've come across that suggests OR has a "pathetic" (or close to that) public education system, even worse than California (which has seen its public school funding cut dramatically in the past decade).

Scotch99, it depends on a person's definition of "pathetic". Some specific schools have better results than others but it is usually associated with the involvement of the parents. Test scores are on the web, some where. We, as most other areas, argue a lot about school funding and results.
I am in my late 60s and had a 'classic' education in that I studied Latin and read the Greek classics (in translation) while attending Portland Public Schools and living in a neighborhood filled with refugees from WWII who were learning English. Most residents had modest income but almost all valued education highly.
When I was in grade school we had a school nurse, full time music and PE teachers. That just doesn't happen today. I think that is pathetic, but my children did well at the same school never the less.
Take the opinions of posters (including me) with a grain of salt. Ask where you can find data, preferably on line.

If you research the state's employment department's website, you'll see their data is
"produced in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, based on the same methodology used by all states."
There are federal implications to a state's rate of unemployment so it would make sense that they share data / methodology.
Interestingly enough, the unemployment rates are not at all generated by people filing claims for unemployment benefits. This would not take in to account the people who have not filed or whose benefits have run out. The numbers are based on household surveys.
