There are good and bad things about the city, but taking weather so strongly into account biases the city a great deal. I know when I was planning to come, each person I talked to about it had this dream of Oregon...it's Green (both in foliage and ideas), it's fun/funky, things are taken in a younger attitude, it rains constantly, and Liberalism/diversity prevails. My experience has been different, not nearly as good as some people dreamed and not as bad as this report.
It's good to rain as well, because it washes the urine smell out of Chinatown/Union Station.

Blazer..Overall I don't disagree with your entire post. I think PDX is still a blue-collar town and that doesn't bother me one bit being working class myself.
I wonder if this person thinks PDX - or any other city - can compete with a place like New York in terms of "culture"? How is that even possible (I don't think it is)? Don't know why this particular commenter thinks that's bad -
Everything is dirty here? ~ This comment actually made me laugh out loud! What an odd perspective clearly from someone whose not had a lot of exposure to large cities. Try walking around NYC, New Orleans or LA. Then compare them in terms of cleanliness to PDX.
For me, there are far too many beautiful scenic areas here to concentrate on any of the city's perceived shortcoming(s). But like they say, to each his own ~

I have to agree about the comparative cleanliness here. When you have lived in a border state and get all the filthy mexicans coming over, then you can discuss unclean.

This really isn't the forum to complain about Mexicans. Why don't you take your insults to the Immigration forum where they're apparently very welcome.

I find the weather here wonderful, most areas quite clean, the people very friendly, the amenities pretty great.
Grew up in Mobile and left because: the weather is awful. Humidity is 100% with temps between 90-110 at least 6 months of the year. It rains almost everyday from March-September. Hurricanes remain a major threat and huge issue from May-November.
The streets of the city are nasty and trash is everywhere. No one takes any pride in the city. The schools are disgraceful; as is the school board-Barton Academy, which is run by idiots and scoundrels.
People are hateful and grumpy, even if they have a job because it's so friggen hot and humid that it makes you crazed. If you don't hunt, fish, drink or watch sports there is nothing much to do. The beaches are laughable-they are nasty and the water murky.
Ditto all the above for New Orleans.
I know a Lot of Southern cities that should be on that list. Amuses me when people say they want to move there for the weather and the beaches.
Just my few cents worth......

I must admit, after living in Wa/Or for most of my life, I cant live there anymore. I moved to the southwest, and have had over 600 days of sunshine in the past 2 years. I thought I missed all the green, and I guess I do, but when I returned to look for a job, it was cloudy and drizzly. It really got me down. Ultimately I decided that I feel happy where the sun shines. Just give me some mountains and some sunshine and I have the perfect combonation. For those who like trees, mountains, and sunshine, NM is a great state. I live in AZ because thats where I found a job. Palm trees have a strange way of cheering my wife and I up too.

Many of the unhappy people in Portland are like this guy:
Moving To New City To Solve All Of Area Man's Problems | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
You often see posts from this type of person on the Oregon forums. They want to move to Portland, the Promised Land, because they aren’t accepted by the backward, unenlightened people where they are presently living – and there are too many Christians, too.
Then they move to Portland and find that things aren’t any better because they brought their problems with them – in other words, they are the problem.
