I think this study must have only interviewed people who post on this board, with all the negativity around here lately... But I question the methodology of how they determined this. Weather, suicide rate, and anti-depressant use? Ok yes, it rains a lot but I think a West Coaster is going to be more open about use of anti-depressants than someone from, say Detroit or Cleveland. In a more conservative and "rust belt" culture people are probably more likely to either a) "suck it up" and drink a beer instead of seeking help for depression or b) lie to the interviewer.

Bottom line, these surveys are often "pop" statistics with no real root in reality. If you are a happy person, surrounded with positive friends, don't think that moving to Portland is suddenly going to make you unhappy.

p.s., note that there are two "Lilys" on this board, please don't confuse me with the author of the prior rascist comments.

Touche, John! I was referring to cracking a tall boy to deal with your stress, rather than enjoying one of the many fine microbrews available out here- didn't mean to insinuate that Portlanders don't enjoy their beer!

I wonder if this person thinks PDX - or any other city - can compete with a place like New York in terms of "culture"? How is that even possible (I don't think it is)? Don't know why this particular commenter thinks that's bad -

Everything is dirty here? ~ This comment actually made me laugh out loud! What an odd perspective clearly from someone whose not had a lot of exposure to large cities. Try walking around NYC, New Orleans or LA. Then compare them in terms of cleanliness to PDX.

For me, there are far too many beautiful scenic areas here to concentrate on any of the city's perceived shortcoming(s). But like they say, to each his own ~

See Bee, the area you are quoting from was not my post. I had cut & pasted a comment by some person off the KGW web site. I didn't fully agree with it, but felt a few good points were made. Personally, I think Portland is a fairly clean city.

our mayor is a pedophile? He screwed an 18 year old. Last I checked, that's over the age of consent. Even if he was younger than legal, 17 is still an adult, physically. When we catch Adams with a 10 year old, then we can discuss pedophilia. In the meantime maybe you should refrain from tossing out such loaded words. I'm not saying his behavior was "right", but let's take it for what it is, an error of judgment.

I know; Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough.

You know, it certainly doesn't bother me that people have varying impressions of a place. We're all entitled to like whatever we want! I like this area, and I've enjoyed the time I've spent here.

Yeah, 18 is young, stupid, and easily influenced...but still not a minor.

Not that I'm a great fan of Portland really, but I don't want to delude myself to thinking a place is worse then it is. There are good things, there are bad things, and their are plenty enough facts to support both opinions on it....and each person places different weights on each concern.

I guess if you don't factor in the crap weather we have for most of the year, or the fact that there's really not that much to do in this city, you'll find Portland a pleasant enough place to live. Not the most energetic or interesting by far, but pleasant enough.

It's all perspective though. Everyone's opinion is tinted by the shade of their own lenses.
