Question Good commuter bike recommendations?

I'm looking for a good commuter bike - something that can comfortably and quickly get me from The Alberta Arts district to downtown in rain or shine. I'd prefer a hybrid rather than road bike, something I could put a small rack on too would be nice. I'm looking to spend around a grand.

Just stop by one of the many bike shops in town and see what they recommend. Hybrids are generally a lot cheaper than road bikes. You'll probably be hard pressed to spend a grand. I bought one from REI about 5 years ago for $350.

Agreed. I bought a very nice hybrid bike (that I use for commuting) from Performance last year for ~$600. I guess if you deck it out in headlights, taillights, spare tire/pump kits, carrying bins, etc. you could push near a grand.

Absolutely. There is so much action now in the hybrid "city bike" segment of the market there is no reason to spend more than ~$300. Nicely appointed shouldn't run more than ~$500. I like the REI line of city bikes. Trek and Specialized have their own take. And not to my taste (but there is no accounting for same) The Electra Townie series. Available also from xtracycle. Google xtracycle and you will think of racks in a whole new way.

I actually don't like hybrids that much- not sturdy enough for trails, not light enough for the city. You've got to go lighter if you want faster, you know? Maybe a used one off craigslist if you're really trying to save?

I would try to find a cyclocross bike (looks like a road bike but is designed to handle light trails). Cyclocross bikes are fast like a road bike, but can handle pot holes, railroad tracks, etc. Great bikes for commuting. Way faster than a hybrid bike. River City has a large selection of cyclocross bikes.
