Powells actually has a great picture book on the domestic architecture of Portland, if you want to learn the difference between a craftsman house and a Portland craftsman!

It's so funny I never gave this any thought (being a Portland native) but when my mom's side of the family came to visit from Boston two years ago they could not stop talking about how beautiful the houses are. Sometimes it takes a fresh perspective to open your eyes to what's been in front of you all along.

that's high praise coming from Boston which has got some pretty astounding architecture in it's own right. Of course, it's also got the influx of banal "triple deckers". One interesting thing about Portland is that I can't think of a boring vernacular type of housing, no "Vancouver Special". It all looks good, at least until you get out past 82nd Ave and the outer suburbs. To compete with SeeBee, some more pix, the first two are inner east side around Belmont, the next two are from Irvington:

Agreed. There are some areas of the city with some really superb looking homes.

On my first visit to Portland this was my primary observation as well. Some of the homes here that would be $1-million + properties in Southern California are way less than half that amount here and with huge yards. There are wonderful Craftsman homes everywhere, but I do miss not seeing stucco Spanish style homes due to the wet weather.
