Portland has some beautiful houses!!!
I moved here recently from the DC area. I love walking around looking at cool houses and building. I was afraid that there wouldn't be much to look at in Portland compared to DC where there are so many cool rowhouses and other architectural gems. Boy was I wrong! Everywhere I look I see so many beautiful homes. I'm just amazed. (now if only I could actually afford to buy one)

I agree. The houses in the pacific northwest have alot more character than other places I have lived in. The houses on the southwest, west and northwest part of time are particularly beautiful. I often ride my bike up to one of the hills near the southwest towers where the houses have an unobstructed view of St. Helens and Hood and ask myself how much such a house would cost. I have to believe at least $1 million. There are a few houses up by council crest which are positioned on a hill and held up by 30 foot beams. What a marvel in architecture.

I love the houses here in Portland, too. My newest favorite area to look at houses is the Dolph Park area just to the west of Grant Park in the NE part of town. I hapen to love Tudor houses and that area is filled to the brim with them. Gorgeous!!!

IMO Portland has some of the nicest houses along with New England. Both those locations have good variety.

I'm actually trying to purchase right now, and yes, there sure are some beautiful houses... none of which I can afford! I'm looking for something around $250 on the east side of the river near a bus/max line (I don't have a car, need to get downtown). It seems that this $250-$300 home price is an awkward one- I can afford more than a condo, but fall short of a house that doesn't need some major work.
Hmm, maybe some of posters around here who hate Portland so much will sell their house to me so they can finally leave!

Lilly, give it a few months. Prices are dropping and you will be in a position to negotiate for a favorable price when you find something within - or close to - your price range.

I love the styles of some of the houses in the area, they are so great looking. With all the water it seems like many need a good deal of maintenance though, it's a pity some really have not been kept up and the water is rotting them. I love the ones with the rustic kind of exposed cedar beams!

Oh my goodness... I love the crafstman/bungalow style homes and Victorian-ish homes in Portland. The tudors are pretty nice too. Strolling through Southeast is a dream for me.

One more thing I love about the Hawthorne area. A walk in my neighborhood is great. Beautiful houses and foliage abound. Spring is especially beautiful when all the fruit trees are in bloom.

You ever go up the roads between the Rose Garden and the Arboretum?
I also like the older NE architecture.
Hillsboro has some good oldies too.
