Kind of neat backyard gardening is taking off more, and Portland is kind of leading the charge. I see it all over where I live, some one even has a whole bunch of chickens (my wife is enamored with them). Definitely the place to grow pretty much anything, though I'm not sure if it gets hot enough for peppers and tomatoes in the wet areas.

Tomatoes and peppers grow just fine. My landlady plants them every year and has a great crop. Some years ago, it was the style to have front yards planted with wild flowers. I loved those.

Hummm, I always had problems with them getting ripe if there wasn't enough days over 90...but I've only lived in apartments, I bet they got grumpy.

Can anyone recommend a basic, sort if "idiot's guide" to gardening? My thumb is indeed quite black. The only thing I've ever planted successfully is habaneros, and they in turn rewarded me with the most indescribable sort of pain in my chestal region.

So you want an idiot's guide to gardening? How about the "Idiot's Guide to Gardening":

Amazon.com: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gardening (Complete Idiots Guide): Jane O'Connor: Books

Is that a personal recommendation?

Not at all...just found it a bit ironic.

While I can't personally recommend a good book, I bought this book for a friend based on reviews:

Amazon.com: The Vegetable Gardener's Bible: Discover Ed's High-Yield W-O-R-D System for All North American Gardening Regions: Edward C. Smith: Books

She loves the book.

Area specific (more or less) books:

Amazon.com: Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades: The Complete Guide to Organic Gardening: Steve Solomon: Books

Amazon.com: Better Vegetable Gardens the Chinese Way: Peter Chan's Raised-Bed System (A Garden Way Publishing Book): Peter Chan: Books

Amazon.com: Gardening with Ed Hume: Northwest Gardening Made Easy: Ed Hume, James Hume: Books

Amazon.com: Winter Gardening in the Maritime Northwest: Cool-Season Crops for the Year-Round Gardener: Binda Colebrook: Books

As far as gardening being in vogue now: for the last decade or so, getting a parking spot at Portland Nursery on Stark St on a Saturday has been impossible....
