Default Construction

I was wondering how the union plumbing trade is doing up there? We are considering moving from San Diego up to Portland to be closer to my family. My husband is a journeyman plumber that does large comercial jobs. Is there any large construction going on? or has that all come to a grinding halt because of the economy. He has stayed working consistantly down here, but are there lots of people sitting home waiting for work to kick off up there or is everybody pretty much working?

I don't know first hand, but I have heard through the grapevine that union jobs are getting harder to come by due to the economy. If you're non union you can still get work because it's cheaper, and the jobs are smaller. Also, I have a brother who is an industrial roofer and work is slow.

I have quiet a few co-workers who are married to out-of-work construction workers. But I do see large buildings being built downtown. Although I think that is going to slow down due to the economy.

A good number of the construction projects are stalled, like the South Waterfront construction projects have pretty much stopped till they get some money.

I would look on Craigslist to get an idea. My friend has been on the waitlist at the plumber's union for a year now and nothing has come up.
