Please tell me that's a joke, no one can't walk out of the house looking like that and think they look cool while possessing a cerebral cortex.

Thank you for the great definition, although the weblink that you provided didn't work for me I get the general idea. It is funny but I was wondering what the word meant as well as I heard it on another forum today... It is a very strange word I guess to me whatever people want to do with themselves it pretty much their own business. As long as it doesn't hurt another person then it is pretty much harmless. I think it makes us all unique when we are different. The term "not in style" has always bothered me. Who really has the right to say that or be a judge as to what is in style anyway?? Think about it.. it is silly to throw everyone in the same mold or box... I know I am probably off topic but just my thoughts. What do you think???

Bad facial hair, particularly large beards, mustaches, and weird sideburns, and/or scruff are the norm among guys. Both genders are inclined to wear thick-rimmed or horn-rimmed glasses, especially if they don't really need them. Old 80's style big brightly colored sunglasses are favored. Big droopy pendants and bandanas are a prerequisite. And, of course, body modification is a big deal. But what it all comes down to is the attitude. Unfriendly, cliquish, and too cool for school. They act like they really don't care, and they ARE cooler than thou. They're generally slackers, lazy, and admiring of anything obscure that you've never heard of in film, literature, music, etc. They're generally irreverent, and are just all around EXTRAORDINARILY PRETENTIOUS.

Look at several pages of this site to get an idea of what they may look like:
www.latfh.com

They're mostly harmless, but they still can be rather annoying with their faux-superior attitudes. And some good people really look like hipsters, but are not. It's basically ALL about the attitude, not necessarily about the dress and appearance.

Hipsters don't bother me much, other than the fact that at some point, atleast in Chicago, the word hipster became synonymous with artist. If you claim to be an artist, how do you invest that much energy into hipsterdom and not into art itself?

Me either.

Hipsters are just the latest incarnation of an old, old phenomenon.

And part of an overall progression of thinking you are better than other people.

First you're a young kid who thinks wearing tight jeans (or whatever is new at the time)
is 'cutting edge' avant garde... and will set you apart from the mindless masses...
then you grow out of that and think NOT wearing (whatever) makes you better than other people.
...and on and on.

Q. What's the same?
A. Thinking you are better than other people.

...like backdrifter's post suggested: it isn't something confined to Hipsterism...it's an attitude.

BTW, I live in Austin (the 3rd tier hipster bargain bin of America)
and just started community college again (I'm in my 30s) so I've had to come to shaky grips
with these self centered kids who take themselves and their clothes WAY too seriously for what they've actually accomplished.

Sad part: many of these people will grow out of this fashion but still think
they're better than everyone that's different than them.
I.E. I vollunteer at FNBs and you don't or haven't as long as me.
I've been working out at a gym longer than you.
I am NOT a vegetarian anymore it's not 'cool'...I'm better than you.
I dress conservatively now, I'm better than you.
I'm not a hipster or into modern fashion...I'm better than them.

Etc.

P.S.
I find myself doing it too so...

P.P.S.
Loved the Adbusters article. The comments there were priceless.
