Math Teacher demand in Portland suburbs???
Hi,
My wife is a registered nurse and may have a job lined up in Portland. I'm in the middle of a career change and am about to get my math teaching credential, although I am working in a different field right now.
Can anybody give me an idea of what the demand is for math teachers in the Portland suburbs? I know that there have been layoffs. I always hear math teachers are needed though.
We currently live in Philadelphia, but want to Oregon where we have family. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Most Oregon districts list their job openings on EdZapp.com. Once you register there, you'll be able to set search parameters and take a look at the available jobs.
What I'm finding is that teaching jobs, even in high-needs subject (I'm in Special Ed) aren't nearly as easy to find as they used to be.
Best of luck to you!

Hi Squeezeboxgal,
When you mentioned not seeing as many teaching jobs as you used to, did you mean in the Portland area, nationally, or some other area?
Thanks again!

My wife is a teacher/writer and I frequently see math positions on the district websites.

Not so many in the Portland area (Portland Public Schools as well as the 'burbs), but also nationwide.
Math teachers may be in more demand, though, especially at the high school level.
FYI: Portland Public Schools are not part of the EdZapp program, so if you're interested in working there, you'll need to go directly to their website.

School Districts
Dark of the Moon,
EDzapp is saved under my favorites. We have been thinking about moving for a few years. There does seem to be less teaching positions this summer. The plan is to move next summer. I am a special education teacher.
It is hard getting a feel for what it would be like to work at different schools from their websites or test scores. What it the atmosphere of Oregon's schools? Student-centered, test score driven, millions of mandates and district initiatives? There is very little difference in salaries from district to district. Are the districts really that different?
Thanks!!
Good Luck teg_76!

Thanks kailee13!
My wife ended up getting her job in OR, so we're probably headed out there. I'm concerned about the education job market. Hopefully we can keep this thread going. If anybody else has anecdotal info. on Portland suburb schools, it would be great to hear it! Thanks!
