Try living in the deep south where the temps are 100+ with humidity 100% for about 9 months of the year.
ahhhhhh.......the Pacific NW--gotta love it!

Actually, Dreamweavin, you're ill-informed. I live here in the deep south, and it's only hot and humid for about 3-4 months of the year. Typically from early June, through mid-september, sometimes as late as October.
The tradeoff? Gorgeous weather the other 8-9 months. While you Portlanders are dealing with constant gloom, we're basking in sunshine and walking around in shorts, even as late as December.
I have family in Portland, and I like both the deep south and portland.

Maybe it's just me.. but everytime I see a picture taken in either Seattle or Portland, the sky is always picturesque blue. I've seen a lot of lovely pictures of both cities here on City-Data and the sky is usually as clear and cloud-free as possible.
I've heard a lot of stories about the gloomy weather, but I'm starting to think the reputation is overblows. Perhaps, to deter people from moving there. Can any local shed some light on this (no pun intended) ??

excuse me?? LOL---I was born in Ms and lived there and in Mobile,Al for 30+ years...........so do tell me-how am I misinformed??? LOL
Hot only 3-4 months of the year?? huh?? are you delusional or just lying?
You think it's great that in DECEMBER shorts can be worn?? again LOL.................that is exactly why I hate the gulf coast; you see in December -which BTW is considered winter; one should be wearing sweaters and jackets.............lordy
I hate constant heat, humidity and sunshine. My advice to you--stay in the south and I'll stay here--where it's normal weather.

Hey guys, it all depends on how you define HOT and HUMID. When I was in Mexico and folks said the humidity was gone for the year, to me it was all relative. Just because I wasn't dripping sweat all over the place didn't mean it wasn't humid any more. Just less humid. I almost never notice humidity here and when I do, it's because it's rarely very high. Ditto with heat. It's all in what you're used to and/or like. I'll take Portland weather over almost any other place in the world. It's lovely and dark and rainy right now in the middle of the afternoon, and I'm happy as a kitten with a ball of yarn.

I wondered about that also when I first started investigating the PNW as a place to live and yes, it did seem overblown. However, a better indicator is to use the street level view on Google Maps. By traveling virtually around many streets to get a better view of what the skies are really like, I have to say that there are a lot of gloomy, misty, low-hanging-cloud pictures there. Which is fine with me! I think many of the pictures are taken on clear days simply because, well, who wants to get a camera wet when it's raining out?
(167 more days until the move from Tampa to Portland!)

I love the rain
I love all the positive points everyone there makes for rain. Its possible to look on the bright side no matter what color the skies are.
I live in Phx,AZ
People move here by the truckloads because they HATE the rain. This leaves me surrounded by people who are always embroiled in discussions about how terrible rain, snow, humidity is.
If I say I dont like it to someone who left Chicago for Phx due to rainless, cloudless skies, the tone gets hostile real fast and I seriously begin to feel like a genetic mutant for liking rain.
Its my view that its pretty hard to get excited about the sunshine when it never goes away. And its the relief of discomfort that makes you appreciate comfort. How much nicer a sunny day is, when you can compare it to the rainy ones.
As one poster said earlier, they believe they have a reverse SAD disorder, I think I might too! Perpetual sunshine is highly overrated.
Water is the source of all life, and the rain is the price you pay for all the beautiful greenery, rivers, and pristine environment you live in. I actually consider the "dry heat" of Phx a negative because its a constant reminder of the absence of water. My attitude is rare here though and puts me at odds with 99% of the population.
Anyhow I took great comfort in knowing that my insane perspective of enjoying rain isnt all that unusual in Portland, so not only will the environment provide some enjoyment but the attitudes of the people seem way more pleasant. Thanks for the thread!!!!

I started this thread thinking I was staying in Portland. Then circumstances and a different job took me to Phoenix.
Get. Me. Out. Of. Here.
I do not understand why people originally settled here. Must have been a wagon wheel issue. Dirt. I got red dirt as far as the eye can see. Maybe some lunar rock formations. This place is a lot like the Moon - if the Moon were made of boredom. Trees give up at about 2 feet tall.
Who wants to wear shorts at Christmas? And by the way, "deep south" is a bit general. I am in a place where it is 100+ from May through - THROUGH - October. Then you bracket either side with 90-ish months, and the only liveable months are those that occupy "winter." Everyone here must have sun-stroke, to some degree, for most of their lives.
So enjoy running through the sprinkler for New Year's. How glorious that must be. I'm just counting the days to my move up to the PNW....
