Again, it's the evergreens in the area which really make a difference sometimes.

The rainy days seem to really wash the air clean in the Portland area. Working outdoors, I find myself breathing a lot less dust and stuff than in dryer climates that I've visited over the years.

That's some pretty classic fog.

You know what town seems to have more fog than Portland? Medford in winter.

Fog? I lived in San Francisco for 18 years, so I think I know fog. I didn't see any fog at all in that photo.

It's a pretty scene, though!

See? It's not so bad!

Default Portland Gloomy Season photos

Here are some gloomy season photos I took a few years back from the house I lived in up in the West Hills. Enjoy! (By the way, I would take Fall/Winter in Portland any day over Spring/Summer. I'm a winter person!!)

Lovely gloom, malachai23. Unfortunately, my computer crashed and I lost all of my winter pics from last season. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more snow this winter ~

I'd like to say I had some better/more accurate representations, but as I don't typically carry a camera around with me in the winter (particularly on any drizzly days), I don't have any to post. I'll see if I can google some that aren't copyrighted and get back to this thread. In, the meantime, please look at the first picture posted by SeeBee, or the the last 3 or 4 immediately preceding my post here, as being more representative.

And I must take exception to the photo of Vista House and the Columbia River Gorge. Yes, it's a beautiful shot, but not typical for winter or even of a cloudy day. Anyone familiar with the setting and the tones in the picture could tell at a glance that the photo was taken in late afternoon or evening with the setting sun coming through a thin cloud cover. Yes, there are clouds in the background, further up the Gorge (east), but it is actually sunny in that photo! On a more typical winter day you might not even be able to see beacon rock in the background due to cloud and weather conditions.
This is the most honest post. Most of the photos are of what could be described as "good" winter days. You can see in a lot of these photos that the sun isn't completely blocked (as evidenced by the light on BIG PINK in one photo). Some may like the comfort of overcast skies, but these photos are, in my mind, pretty misleading.

I have absolutely enjoyed seeing these "gloomy" pictures of the Portland area.
I am not from Portland nor have I even step foot in the Pacific NW. I visited SF a few years ago and fell in love with the redwood forest (Muir Woods) and the foggy coastline there. It was such a welcome change to the HOT and dry summers here in Oklahoma.
We just experienced weeks of 100 plus degree weather that absolutely sucks the life out of me. It's depressing that my two boys and I are confined indoors (although they would happily play outside regardless of how hot it is!). I am counting down the days until Autumn when the leaves change and I can layer on clothes again...usually this does not occur until late Oct, early November.

Anyways, these pictures are absolutely beautiful! I love how vibrant the colors are...everything looks SO full of life there. The amount of green is just tantilizing (it is my favorite color).
This just further fuels my fire to move out of the south and into the NW...unfortunately that will have to wait a good 5-10 yrs from now (Okc is CHEAP and my husband is secure in his job, moving forward). One day he dreams of working for Microsoft (or any other big software/IT company out there) but that will have to wait until he's gained more experience as a programmer...we are young and near our family here. Can't beat having free babysitters for the kids!

But one day, I am determined to get us out of here....until then I can just dream of dreary days and cool summers where I never have to worry about 100+ degree weather again.

You are 50% correct and 50% wrong.

To me, the very foggy, overcast or stormy days and nights are great. Even over the border when I hike in the redwoods, the fog provides atmosphere like no sunny day could do, and likewise the reverse.

I work outdoors at least 200 days per year. In my expert outdoors Oregon opinion, all the photos in this thread are an accurate representation.
