My daughters, recent college grads, are planning to move to Portland in Sept. and, thusfar, haven't had any luck finding a 2BR apt. Their budget dictates a $900 max. rent and they must be close to public transportation (preferably free) as they will not have vehicles. Craigslist and Oregonlive, etc. seem to focus on out-of-city areas. Any ideas of how/where to search? They are on the east coast now although we did visit at the end of July and followed suggestions of walking the streets looking for "For Rent" signs on buildings which proved fruitless. Thanks for any suggestions.

Well it kind of depends. Where are their jobs located or are they planning on continuing their education? If the latter is the case, a good source would be their school. Keep in mind though that apartments near free transportation will be very expensive. The only free transportation beginning in January will be the streetcars and light rail downtown.

A $900 month max for a 2 br is very doable. You stated you tried walking around and looking for "For Rent" signs and had no luck. Try it again and keep working at it. You can fine good deals that way since not all properties are listed online. Where will she be working at? start from there are start looking for apartment near by, walk to the nearest max/bus stop and get of of a stops along the way and walk around those neighborhoods. You will find the best deals that way and be close to work. And when she finds a place have here walk around the neighborhood and see if she feels confortable with the area. There nuking the fareless square pretty much but a month pass is so much cheaper then dealing with car payment, insurance, maintenence, gas, etc.. Good Luck and Welcome to Portland!

Thanks for your responses. They will be looking for work once they get to Portland, not the best approach, perhaps, but....We did walk around a lot and liked several areas - NW (expensive and really hard to find a 2BR), South Park blocks, Hawthorne/Belmont, Hollywood, Buckman, Alberta. Good to know about the fareless, I wasn't aware of upcoming changes. They may end up making another trip there.

Not the best approach!!!!!? You are kidding, right? Please read other threads regarding the employment situation. Even a qualified nurse (see Melissa's posts) who was planning on moving to Portland couldn't get work. Above all please read
