I read the whole thing and there was one part that was dead on true. in the last paragraph it stated that native portland people were not interested in making new friends because they've had the same friends since elementary school. I'm a portland native and every friend I have I've known since elementary school, and there are reasons why locals don't want to befriend transplants. the main reason for me is those people always want something from you, and they bug and bug you until they get what they want. They usually want you to hang out with them all the time, they want to get to know you and everyone you know, and they get pissy if you don't make any time for them. or they want to know where all the biking/hiking trails are that aren't in the books you buy at REI. It gets old and very annoying.

well they have one thing right. people in Portland cant drive at all. also the thing about the government is somewhat normal in most of the country.

why would someone expect there to be a lot of mountain biking in a city?

besides, one of the things i hate so much about Portland is the cities love of bicyclists. unmotorized vehicles should not be on the road.

lets see what else.

from what i understand Portlanders tend to be nicer then people in Seattle. although i have had few people be just plain rude in either city.

all in all i like portland.

oh yeah! the RAIN! people who say it rains a lot i think may be full of it. it dosent rain that often. unfortunately. ive also only been here for a year so...

yay portland!

True. But some of us sometimes do need to get somewhere rapidly, so it would be nice if everyone weren't driving 10 mph below the speed limit in both lines, and slamming on the brakes every time the road bends even slightly, or coming to a complete stop while on a through street in order to let the guy at the Stop sign on the crossing street to go. There's courteous driving - which I am a fan of, AND which I was pleased to discover here in Oregon - and then there's overly mousy driving that becomes dangerous, which we need less of here.

I have to beg to differ... Oregon drivers are good. Try driving anywhere else in the country. Ugh.

This guy lost all credibility with me when he said the sky wasn't really blue. The sky here and in Seattle has an intense blue quality in the summer that is superior, yes I said superior, to the skies in other places I've lived. So there!

About the drivers, the slowness has little to do with the individuals from what I can see and much more to do with too many cars for the amount of road. For example if you are on 26 going east with the goal of taking the exit for 405-S (or the other two choices) there's a one lane bottleneck for each, but esp. for the 405-S choice most times of day that line stretches very far back. That's not the fault of slow drivers. Oh and I'm a slow driver in Beaverton, I'm scared of photo radar now and tend to go 5 under now - if I try to go exactly the speed limit I'm scared my foot will slip and they'll get me again.

I disagree. Drive in LA, Chicago, or NYC. Traffic problems are much worse there, yet you don't find people going 45mph in the passing lane as often.

I'm not a speedster by any stretch of the imagination, but I do like to at least go the speed limit when there is no traffic. The thing people people fail to realize is that not only is it annoying, its a violation of the vehicle code:

811.315 Failure of slow driver to drive on right; exceptions; penalty. (1) A person commits the offense of failure of a slow driver to drive on the right if the person is operating a vehicle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing and the person fails to drive:
(a) In the right-hand lane available for traffic; or
(b) As close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
(2) This section does not apply under any of the following circumstances:
(a) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing passing in ORS 811.410 to 811.425.
(b) When preparing to turn left at an intersection, alley or private road or driveway.
(3) The offense described in this section, failure of slow driver to drive on the right, is a Class B traffic violation. [1983 c.338 §619; 1995 c.383 §57]

I would beg to differ. The sky in E. Oregon and Montana (and much of the Rockies for that matter) is much bluer than Portland or Seattle. The Willamete Valley typically has haze, dust, high pollen count in the summer.
