Get out of Portland
Maybe the reason I still enjoy living in the Portland area after more than 40 years, is because I get out of the Portland area often. Out to Eagle Creek trail, out to Cannon Beach and out to Mt. Hood.
What makes this area so good to live in, is not merely Oregon outdoors, but being central to Mt. Rainier, Ape Caves, Olympic National Park and the largest coast redwoods 5 to 6 hours to the south. The State of Jefferson.
To those who say "Everything is big in Texas" we can say "not the trees"
We have one of the biggest rivers on our north boundary, and the largest and tallest coast redwoods minutes from our south border.
What natural destinations do others enjoy to get out of Portland ??

I always enjoyed "getting away" to Multnomah Falls. I have been there a million and a half times and never has it gotten "old" or failed to take my breath away. And it is a great hike up to the top - a good workout! Then you can get a great big fattyburger at the lodge and forget you ever burned any calories. LOL Sure, there are a lot of tourists but most of them don't make it past the bridge

Agreed. Is nice to be able to get out of the big city easily still. I live south toward Salem, so nice country scenery there. My favorite trail is Eagle Creek in Columbia Gorge, and a popular one! Am planning a trip to Hood River and Mt Hood in a few weeks, not much snow up there yet. Always enjoy the train ride up and around Mt Hood and the apple orchards, quaint!
I am from Texas, and there are trees, East Texas has the Pine Woods. A very diverse state topographically. I just moved up here again last year from the Panhandle area. Very few trees, high plains, mostly flat with a few nice canyonland areas. I do miss it, especially the beautiful sunsets and serenity.

But...to get to these areas I'd have to use a c-c-c-c-car! It would be like I took a knife and put it straight in Mother Earth's heart.

Here is another place I used to love to "get away" to. I watched St. Helens erupt, and I have been driving up to see her regularly ever since they opened the roads back up. Yah, yah, it's in Washington, but it's not far from P-town
