How is Tualatin?
I live in Arizona and have visited Oregon and loved it. I could transfer with my job to the Portland area, but would rather live in the suburbs than in the city itself. My wife and I have a three year old so urban night life isn't a priority. Is rent high in Tualatin? Are there areas with a lot of crime nearby? We like the outdoors, books, and occasional museum-gallery type culture. We don't make much money so luxury condos and high-end shopping are the opposite of what we're looking for.

On a relative scale, the entire Portland area is safe. It is a large community, therefore there is some crime. Tualatin from what very little I know, is safe; well maybe except for the odd bar fight, domestic dispute, and car-bicycle accidents (these seem to get ugly and bloody as cars have so much more mass.).
This is what I have found out...
1- You will get to know black-berry canes and blackberry thorns on the canes REAL up-close and personal for as long as you live in Tualatin... Them's be the 'Weeds" you will fight in your backyard. Growth rate is reported to be just incredible.
2. Limited Mass Transit options at this time. Unless you can figure out the WES light rail system.
3- I-5 is no joy during rush hour into downtown Portland. Hopefully, your commute is heading south if you use I-5 in the morning.
That ends my knowledge of Tualatin, and it is all second hand knowledge.

I lived in Tualatin for 5 years. Nice burb. I5 can drive you nuts, but It's a nice town to live in. Nice parks, library, Bridgeport Village was really nice. I don't have kids, but hear the schools are really good. I think it's a good choice for one of the burbs.

I think Tualatin is a nice area. I lived in King City (neighboring town) for a little over a year and enjoyed it. You'll have everything your family needs in-town, and a short 15-20 minute drive downtown. Pretty good family area all-in-all.

I used to live in Tualatin, and one of my stepsons does now, and I concur with the above posts: it's a nice suburb with no high-crime areas that I'm aware of. My stepson lives in a decent three-bedroom apartment that he shares with roommates, and the manager just dropped their rent by $200 per month as an inducement to renew the lease. If you like suburbs, you'll like Tualatin.

Tualatin has always been a generally safe suburb of Portland, besides the shooting yesterday and Old navy being robber recently. Be prepared for traffic!

I agree with all of these posts. Seriously, expect to spend a lot of time in your car to go only a few miles. There is not an alternative route for semi-trucks & delivery trucks to take, so they use Tualatin-Sherwood Road as does everybody else. It's the one and only direct route from I-5 to Sherwood.
I like Tualatin. I wouldn't have any problem recommending it to you - other than the traffic. There are apartment complexes which I certainly wouldn't recommend, but not especially "bad" neighborhoods. It depends upon where in Portland you'll be working. Another suburb might just work out better for you.

Don't forget that Tualatin extends to the east of I-5 as well. Thats where I live. There are two benefits to this. First, I have absolutely no traffic getting to or from I-5 since I never get on Tualatin-Sherwood road. Secondly, I'm in Clackamas County, not Washington County so my real estate taxes are a bit lower.

Good point. I still remember, to my horror apparently, how crowded T-S Road was when I worked in Tualatin.

I keep forgetting that Tualatin goes out that way also. That would be great place to be for easy access to I-5. |
