You don't want a humid climate with arthritis.

I always heard the dry heat was what people went for with arthritis, such as Arizona.

That is exactly what they need, dry heat. Humidity makes your bones ache if you have arthritis.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I have always wondered about that....
Why exactly does humid weather make the arthritis feel worse?
Now since I come from the Mid-West, and have lived on the Eastern Seaboard (Baltimore), it is very common that a low-pressure system will draw up Gulf Coast humidity with the counter-clock-wise wind rotation. Any High Pressure system will be coming from Canada; usually from the Canadian Province of Alberta or Saskatchewan. These Canadian High Pressure fronts are cool dry air masses.
I can very easily envision that it really is the the low-pressure affecting arthritis, since lower atmospheric pressure will affect human blood flow and blood pressure. It has to do with return blood flow and extremities like lower legs.
Now, since I have been in Portland, what I also have noticed is that a few times back in August and September, a low pressure system would draw air up from the desert southwest, a hot-dry air with none of the humidity I normally would associate with a low-pressure front and it's counter-clockwise rotation.
Does anyone know why humid air affects arthritis and not air-pressure?
Phil

Portland would be my last choice....
if I had arthritis. My husband suffers from it and it always improves when we visit dry, warm climates.

Yes, I am sure it does, and many others report the same,
I am just asking WHY does the warm dry climates have a positive affect?

I couldn't resist Googling this and the best answer I came up with was here:
Arthritis and Weather - Do You Feel the Storm Approaching?
I guess the best answer is there is no answer. Personally I don't have arthritis but my old bones do feel better in drier weather. So does my breathing problem (Sarciodosis).

Well a humid climate is a damp climate. I would imagine that is why arthritis is bad as is asthma in humid climates.

What kind of arthritis are we talking about??
I have had rheumatoid all my adult life, and no weather has ever affected my joints.
What DID affect me when I moved to PDX two years ago were the months of darkness. I got tired, depressed, and went into mild flareup.
BUT - my doctor wrote an RX for a light therapy box and all is solved! I am now free to enjoy all that this area has to offer, and I love it.
