you can try Apartments for Rent & Homes for Rent - Rent.com® Apartment Finder
but I find craigslist the best.

Default I would do this....

Look up property management companies in Portland and call each one or look on their websites. One good one is mainlander.com...and there is fox properties....and several others I cannot recall at the moment. They usually have very helpful folks to help you find a rental..esp a house. However..I will say that craigslist is hard to beat in Portland for finding a house.

Good luck to you!! Private landlords are great to work with, usually.

Most rented homes are owned by individuals who typically own 1-3 residences. That is why folks use Craig's List. Those rented through property management companies are more frequently high end (expensive).

Notices are sometimes put on grocery store bulletin boards and on front lawns. To effectively use that approach you need to know your target neighborhood. Employer BBs often have rentals. In some very popular neighborhoods word of mouth is what works.

When you find a house that seems to be attractive and the owner asks you for references ask them for the same. I would want the name and contact information of previous tenants, maybe knock on nearby doors and talk to neighbors. It is amazing what people will tell you.
